Overview
ISO 9448-3:2013 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the main dimensions, tolerances, materials, and hardness requirements for guide bushes of form B, ball cage bushes, plain, type 1. These guide bushes are designed specifically for use in press tools and are intended to be mounted in the clamp plate via an interference fit. This standard is essential for manufacturers and engineers working with pressing tools to ensure compatibility, precision, and durability of the guide bushes.
The document focuses on guide bushes used to guide ball bearings within press tooling applications. It sets clear guidelines on nominal dimensions, tolerances, surface finishes, and hardness, helping to ensure reliable and consistent performance in industrial pressing operations.
Key Topics
Dimensions and Tolerances
The standard provides detailed specifications for the main dimensions of form B guide bushes, including diameter and length measurements in millimeters. It covers:- Nominal diameters ranging from 12 mm to 160 mm
- Tolerance classes for manufacturing precision
- Surface roughness requirements (e.g., a surface roughness Ra = 0.05 µm after grinding)
Materials and Hardness
While the choice of material is left to the manufacturer, ISO 9448-3:2013 mandates a hardness of 63 ± 1 HRC to ensure durability and wear resistance, crucial for the high-stress environment within press tools.Designation and Identification
The standard defines a systematic naming convention for guide bushes for easy identification, which includes:- The term "Guide bush"
- The standard reference "ISO 9448-3"
- Form type (e.g., B)
- Diameter and length (e.g., 12 × 25)
This facilitates clear communication across manufacturing and supply chains.
Mounting Instructions
Guide bushes are designed to be mounted in press tools using interference fits, typically placed in clamp plates or tool shoes, ensuring a secure and stable assembly.
Applications
ISO 9448-3:2013 guide bushes are primarily used in various press tool operations across multiple industries, including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and general manufacturing. Typical use cases include:
- Metal Stamping and Forming: Precision guide bushes support ball cage assemblies to ensure smooth and accurate alignment of press components during high-speed stamping or forming operations.
- Die and Mold Tooling: These bushes play a critical role in the longevity and accuracy of dies and molds by reducing wear and tear on moving parts.
- Mechanical Presses: They contribute to reliable functioning by maintaining correct positioning of guide pins and ensuring consistent tool motion.
- Heavy-duty Industrial Presses: The hardness and precise tolerances ensure resistance to deformation and wear in demanding environments.
Related Standards
ISO 9448-3:2013 is part of a comprehensive series of ISO standards covering guide bushes for pressing tools, including:
- ISO 9448-1: General forms of guide bushes.
- ISO 9448-2: Form A, plain guide bushes for smooth guiding, type 1.
- ISO 9448-4: Form C, collar guide bushes for smooth guiding, type 1.
- ISO 9448-5: Form D, collar guide bushes for ball cage guiding, type 1.
- ISO 6508-1: Specifies Rockwell hardness testing-relevant for verifying hardness requirements in ISO 9448-3.
These related documents provide further specifications and options for different types of guide bushes, enabling manufacturers to choose appropriate components for their specific pressing tool applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the

membres votants.
