Overview
ISO 727-1:2002 addresses the dimensional requirements for fittings made from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U), chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C), or acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS), specifically those with plain (cylindrical or conical) sockets designed for pipe systems operating under pressure. This international standard, published by ISO, specifies a metric series for socket dimensions to enable the secure connection of pipes using solvent cementing without mechanical anchorage. The standard is critical for ensuring system compatibility, reliability, and safety across plastic pressure piping installations.
Key Topics
- Socket Types: Defines both cylindrical and conical (tapered) sockets for plastic fittings, detailing their geometric requirements.
- Material Scope: Applicable to fittings manufactured from PVC-U, PVC-C, and ABS, supporting compatibility across commonly used plastic piping materials.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Establishes specific dimensional tolerances-such as minimum socket length, inside diameter at midpoint, and allowable out-of-roundness-to safeguard performance and ensure interchangeability.
- Assembly Method: Focuses on solvent cementing as the method of jointing, eliminating the need for mechanical anchorage in pressure pipe systems.
- Standardization Goals: Promotes global compatibility and standardization for thermoplastic pipe fittings in potable water supply, industrial, and other pressure piping applications.
Applications
ISO 727-1:2002 is widely implemented in sectors requiring reliable pressurized fluid transport through plastic piping systems. Key applications include:
- Water Supply Systems: Used in municipal and building plumbing for potable or process water under pressure.
- Industrial Piping: Facilitates the transport of liquids and chemicals in manufacturing and processing plants.
- Irrigation Systems: Supports agricultural sprinkler and drip irrigation networks where consistent pressure is vital.
- Civil Engineering Projects: Plays a role in infrastructure installations such as pressure sewer lines and fire suppression circuits.
By adhering to ISO 727-1:2002, manufacturers, engineers, and installers benefit from:
- Enhanced System Integrity: Specified socket dimensions and tolerances reduce the risk of leaks or fitting failures.
- Simplified Procurement and Installation: Standardized sizing promotes interchangeability between suppliers and ease of installation.
- Compliance and Safety: Supports regulatory compliance for materials and installation practices in water and industrial systems.
Related Standards
When implementing ISO 727-1:2002, it is important to reference related standards to ensure comprehensive compliance and system performance:
- ISO 161-1: Specifies nominal outside diameters and pressures for thermoplastic pipes in the metric series-essential for matching pipes to fittings.
- ISO 727-2: Details the inch-based series for similar fittings, relevant where imperial sizing is required.
- ISO 11922-1: Addresses dimensions and tolerances for thermoplastics pipes, serving as a foundational reference for determining fitting compatibility.
For best results, professionals are encouraged to consult both the manufacturer’s recommendations and applicable normative documents when selecting fittings and solvent cementing procedures.
By integrating ISO 727-1:2002 into piping system design, construction, and maintenance, organizations can achieve greater assurance of long-term performance, compatibility, and international acceptance in pressure pipe installations using PVC-U, PVC-C, or ABS materials.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 727 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 727-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 138, Plastics pipes, fittings and
valves for the transport of fluids, Subcommittee SC 2, Plastics pipes and fittings for water supplies.
Together with ISO 727-2, this first edition of ISO 727-1 cancels and replaces ISO 727:1985, which has been
technically revised.
ISO 727 consists of the following parts, under the general title Fittings made from unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride)
(PVC-U), chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-C) or acrylonitrile/butadiene/styrene (ABS) with plain sockets for
pipes under pressure:

Avant-propos
