Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
IS0 11683 was prepared by the European Com-

mittee for Standardization (as EN 272) and was adopted, under a special
"fast-track procedure", by Technical Committee ISO/TC 122, Packaging,
in parallel with its approval by the IS0 member bodies.

Introduction
When blind or visually handicapped persons are handling a package, it is

L'ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) est une fédération

Introduction
Lorsque les personnes aveugles ou handicapées de la vue manipulent un
emballage, il leur est difficile ou impossible de s'assurer que l'emballage
contient des substances ou préparations inoffensives ou dangereuses.
Ce problème peut être résolu en:
- prévoyant, pour un emballage contenant des substances ou prépa-
rations dangereuses, un symbole tactile conforme à la présente Norme
internationale, et en
- apprenant aux personnes aveugles et handicapées de la vue la signi-
fication et l'emplacement du symbole tactile sur l'emballage.
Pour les personnes aveugles et handicapées de la vue, un symbole tactile
de conception simple facilite les processus d'enseignement et d'appren-
tissage et procure une garantie d'identification.
