Overview
ISO 14580:2011 is an international standard specifying the characteristics of hexalobular socket cheese head screws. This standard applies to product grade A screws with thread sizes ranging from M2 up to and including M10. Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Subcommittee SC 10, this edition supersedes the original 2001 publication, incorporating minor revisions to improve clarity and usability. Hexalobular socket cheese head screws, often used for their superior torque transmission and reduced cam-out, are standardized to ensure consistency in dimensions, materials, mechanical properties, and surface treatments.
Key Topics
Dimensions and Thread Sizes: ISO 14580:2011 defines precise dimensions for thread sizes M2 through M10, including pitch, head height, socket sizes, and tolerances. It aligns dimensional symbols and descriptions with ISO 225 for ease of application.
Material and Mechanical Properties: The standard specifies various material classes such as carbon steel, stainless steel, and non-ferrous metals. Mechanical properties align with ISO 898-1 for carbon steel and ISO 3506-1 for stainless steel fasteners, focusing on ensuring reliable performance under mechanical stress.
Tolerance Classes: Threads are to meet the 6g tolerance class per ISO 965-2, ensuring compatibility with mating components. Product grades and mechanical property classes are to be selected according to user needs and the application environment.
Hexalobular Socket Details: The hexalobular internal driving feature is standardized according to ISO 10664, guaranteeing uniformity in socket dimensions and functionality, which enhances tool engagement and reduces wear on both screws and drivers.
Surface Finishes and Coatings: Electroplated coatings follow ISO 4042, while non-electrolytically applied zinc flake coatings comply with ISO 10683. Additional finish requirements can be negotiated between supplier and purchaser to meet specific corrosion resistance or aesthetic demands.
Quality and Inspection: Acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269, with surface discontinuities controlled under ISO 6157-1 to ensure product integrity and performance consistency.
Applications
Hexalobular socket cheese head screws standardized under ISO 14580:2011 are widely used in industries requiring precise fastening solutions with strong torque capabilities and aesthetic finishes. Common application areas include:
- Automotive Manufacturing: Providing high-strength, reliable fasteners in engine compartments and body assemblies.
- Electronics and Electrical Equipment: Offering compact fastening solutions where space is limited and screw head profile is critical.
- Machinery and Equipment: Used in assemblies that demand high durability and consistent mechanical performance.
- Construction and Metal Fabrication: Ensuring standardized fasteners for structural and architectural components.
- Consumer Products: In devices requiring durable, corrosion-resistant fasteners with aesthetic socket heads.
The hexalobular socket design minimizes tool slippage and facilitates higher torque application, making these screws well-suited for automated assembly lines and maintenance operations.
Related Standards
Implementing ISO 14580:2011 often involves referencing several complementary ISO standards for comprehensive fastening solutions:
- ISO 225: Symbols and descriptions of fastener dimensions.
- ISO 261 & ISO 965-2: General-purpose metric screw threads and thread tolerances.
- ISO 898-1: Mechanical properties of carbon and alloy steel fasteners.
- ISO 3506-1: Mechanical properties of corrosion-resistant stainless steel fasteners.
- ISO 10664: Specification of the hexalobular internal driving feature.
- ISO 4042 & ISO 10683: Surface finishes and corrosion protection coatings.
- ISO 3269: Acceptance inspection protocols for fasteners.
- ISO 4759-1: Tolerances for bolts, screws, studs, and nuts according to product grades.
Adhering to ISO 14580:2011 together with these related standards ensures interoperability, quality, and reliability across industries employing hexalobular socket cheese head screws.
By following ISO 14580:2011 specifications, manufacturers and end-users can achieve consistent quality, enhanced performance, and interchangeability of hexalobular socket cheese head screws in a variety of demanding applications. This standard supports global harmonization of fastener production and helps reduce procurement risks related to dimensional and material inconsistencies.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 14580 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 2, Fasteners, Subcommittee SC 10, Product
standards for fasteners.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 14580:2001), of which it constitutes a minor
revision. It also incorporates the Technical Corrigendum ISO 14580:2001/Cor.1:2004.

Avant-propos
