Overview

ISO 9448-5:2013 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions, tolerances, material guidelines, and designation rules for a specific type of guide bushes used in press tools. This part of the ISO 9448 series focuses on Form D, headed ball cage bushes, type 1, which are designed to be mounted in the clamp plate of press tools with transition fit and secured by screws.

These guide bushes are critical components in precision pressing operations, ensuring smooth and accurate movement while reducing wear and tear between moving parts. The standard ensures compatibility and interchangeability of these bushes across different manufacturers and tools.

Key Topics

  • Dimensions and Tolerances: The standard defines the main dimensions of Form D ball cage bushes including diameters, lengths, clearances, and screw sizes. Tolerances are provided in millimetres, ensuring consistent quality and fit. Key dimensions such as the internal diameter to be lapped or ground with a surface roughness of Ra = 0.05 µm are emphasized for proper preloading of balls.

  • Material Requirements: While the specific material choice is left to manufacturers, ISO 9448-5 specifies that the hardness of the bushes must be (63 ± 1) HRC. This hardness ensures durability and resistance to mechanical stress during pressing operations.

  • Designation System: The guide bush designation follows a systematic approach including:

    • The term "Guide bush"
    • Reference to ISO 9448-5
    • The form (D)
    • Guiding diameter (D1) in millimetres
    • Length (l1) in millimetres
For example, a guide bush with a 16 mm diameter and 25 mm length is designated as:
      Guide bush ISO 9448-5 D - 16 × 25
  • Mounting and Fit: Form D ball cage bushes are mounted with a transition fit in the clamp plate and fixed by screws. The standard provides recommended sizes and fits to prevent assembly errors and ensure secure placement.

Applications

ISO 9448-5:2013 is predominantly used in the tooling and metal pressing industries, particularly for:

  • Press tools and dies: Ensuring accurate guiding and alignment of moving parts in stamping, punching, and forming operations.
  • Precision manufacturing: Applications requiring high durability, precise dimensions, and reliable performance of guide bushes in heavy-duty pressing equipment.
  • Maintenance and Replacement: Facilitates standardized replacement parts for repairing and upgrading existing press tools.

Adherence to this standard helps manufacturers and users achieve enhanced tool life, consistent performance, and reduced downtime in production processes.

Related Standards

ISO 9448-5:2013 is part of a comprehensive series covering various types and forms of guide bushes for pressing tools:

  • ISO 9448-1 - Defines forms of guide bushes
  • ISO 9448-2 - Form A, gliding bushes, plain, type 1
  • ISO 9448-3 - Form B, ball cage bushes, plain, type 1
  • ISO 9448-4 - Form C, gliding bushes, headed, type 1
  • ISO 9448-6 - Form E, gliding bushes, flanged, type 1
  • ISO 9448-7 - Form F, ball cage bushes, flanged, type 1

Additionally, ISO 6508-1 is referenced for the Rockwell hardness testing method, critical for material hardness determination.

Practical Value

Implementing ISO 9448-5:2013 in design and manufacturing processes offers significant benefits:

  • Ensures interchangeability and compatibility of guide bushes across different suppliers.
  • Provides clear material and hardness criteria to improve part longevity and reduce tooling failures.
  • Reduces risks of assembly errors through standardized dimensions and transition fits.
  • Facilitates quality control and inspection by defining surface roughness and tolerance requirements.
  • Supports international trade and procurement by harmonizing specifications globally.

By conforming to this standard, press tool manufacturers and maintenance professionals can achieve reliable, efficient, and cost-effective pressing operations.

membres votants.
