Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Classification - Part 3: Family D (Compressors)

ISO 6743-3:2003 establishes the detailed classification of lubricants for use in family D, air compressors, gas compressors and refrigeration compressors. The intention of ISO 6743-3:2003 is to provide a rationalized range of the most commonly used internationally available lubricants for air, gas and refrigeration compressors, without resorting to unnecessary restriction by specifications or products description. The primary intention of this classification is to describe and promote the use of the type of lubricant which is best suited for the particular application, specifically with stationary air compressors, with the aim of reducing as far as possible the risks of fire and explosion. Relevant safety rules are given in ISO 5388. ISO 6743-3:2003 should be read in conjunction with ISO 6743-99.

Overview

ISO 6743-3:2003 - Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Part 3: Family D (Compressors) defines a detailed, practical classification system for lubricants used in air compressors, gas compressors and refrigeration compressors. The standard provides a rationalized range of internationally available compressor lubricants (mineral, semi‑synthetic and fully synthetic) and coding conventions (e.g., ISO‑L‑DAB 68 or L‑DAB 68) to promote correct lubricant selection and reduce risks such as fire and explosion in stationary compressor applications.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Classification system: Family D is broken into category codes (e.g., DAA, DAB, DAG, DAH, DAJ, DVA–DVF, DGA–DGE, DRA–DRG) that identify lubricant types by application (reciprocating, rotary, oil‑flooded, vacuum, process gas, refrigeration).
  • Viscosity grading: Lubricants are supplemented by ISO viscosity grades per ISO 3448 (e.g., “68” in ISO‑L‑DAB 68).
  • Lubricant chemistries: Covers highly refined mineral oils, semi‑synthetic, and synthetic fluids (polyalkylene glycols, polyolesters, polyalphaolefins, polyvinylethers) and classifies miscible vs. immiscible behaviour with refrigerants.
  • Duty definitions: Differentiates normal and severe duty (Annex A), with practical criteria - e.g., discharge temperatures (100 °C, 165 °C), differential pressures (2.5 MPa) and discharge pressures (7.0 MPa) - to guide lubricant selection and drain cycles.
  • Process gas compatibility: Specific categories address gas chemistry and reactivity (inert, reducing, reactive gases) and warn against mixing incompatible formulations without supplier consultation.
  • Vacuum and refrigeration guidance: Includes vacuum lubricant groupings (low to high vacuum) and refrigeration lubricant families matched to refrigerant types (NH3, HFC, CFC/HCFC, CO2, hydrocarbons).
  • Safety focus: Primary aim is to reduce fire/explosion risk in stationary compressors; references safety rules in ISO 5388.

Applications and users

Who uses ISO 6743-3:2003:

3 Explanation of systems used
3.1 The detailed classification of family D has been established by defining the categories of products
required for the main applications of this family.
3.2 Each category is designated by a symbol consisting of a group of letters, which together constitute a
code.
NOTE The first letter of the code “D” identifies the family of the product considered but the second and third letters
taken separately have no significance of their own.
The designation of each category may be supplemented by the addition of viscosity grades according to
ISO 3448.
3.3 In this classification system, products are designated in a uniform manner in accordance with ISO 8681.
For example, a particular product may be designated in a complete form, e.g., ISO-L-DAB 68, or in an
abbreviated form, e.g., L-DAB 68, the number indicating the viscosity grade according to ISO 3448.

NORME INTERNATIONALE ISO 6743-3:2003(F)

Lubrifiants, huiles industrielles et produits connexes
(classe L) — Classification —
Partie 3:
Famille D (Compresseurs)
1 Domaine d'application
