Overview
ISO 24987: Tools for Pressing - Trombone Head Punches is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies the essential dimensions, tolerances, and material characteristics for trombone head punches used predominantly in sheet metal processing. Standardization ensures consistent quality and interoperability of tooling components in various industrial applications. The document covers punch designs with shank diameters from 4 mm to 20 mm, including both standard and ejector types, and addresses several geometric forms such as round, square, rectangular, and oblong.
Designed for manufacturers, quality managers, and tool designers in the metalworking and pressing industries, ISO 24987 provides clear criteria for punch selection, designation, and installation. The standard also outlines a setting up system to support seamless integration with press tool systems.
Key Topics
Dimensions and Tolerances:
The standard specifies basic dimensions in millimetres and corresponding tolerances, enabling precision and compatibility in press tool assemblies.Types and Forms:
ISO 24987 details a variety of trombone head punch types:- Punches with straight or reduced shank
- Punches with and without ejectors
- Geometric forms: round, square, rectangular, and oblong
Material and Hardness:
Examples of suitable materials and hardness levels are provided to ensure longevity and reliable performance. Selections commonly include alloyed cold work steel and high-speed steel, with recommended hardness values for both the punch point and head.Designation System:
A standardized system for designating trombone head punches and their seats, covering relevant parameters such as type, diameter, point dimensions, length, and material, to facilitate clear communication and ordering.Setting Up System:
Annex A defines the seat dimensions, mounting procedures, and compatible milling tools necessary for accurate installation and use in press tooling systems.
Applications
ISO 24987 trombone head punches are primarily used for punching holes in steel sheet. Their standardized shapes and precise tolerances also make them suitable for use with other materials in various industrial settings, including:
- Automotive manufacturing: For creating precise holes in structural and body components.
- Appliance production: Used in fabricating enclosures and internal sheet metal assemblies.
- General sheet metal fabrication: Applicable wherever accuracy and repeatability in punching operations are required.
- Tool and die making: Ensures compatibility with standardized press equipment and replacement parts.
Standardized punches streamline maintenance, reduce downtime, and minimize the risk of errors in tool assembly. By following ISO 24987, manufacturers can ensure quality control, reduce waste, and improve production efficiency.
Related Standards
