Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

1 Scope
This International Standard specifies the dimensions and clearances for front hand-guards on portable hand-held
chain-saws. These dimensions and clearances ensure the necessary safety provided by the hand-guard, which
serves as both a shield between the operator’s hand and the saw chain and as an actuator for manually operated
chain brakes. This International Standard is not applicable to chain-saws with wraparound handles.
2 Normative reference
The following normative document contains provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of
this International Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these
publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to
investigate the possibility of applying the most recent edition of the normative document indicated below. For
undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members of ISO and IEC

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this International Standard, the terms and definitions given in ISO 6531 apply.
4 General
The dimensions of the front hand-guard and the clearances shall be in relation to the intended position of the left
hand on the front handle during vertical cutting (bucking), determined using defined gauges (see clause 5).
Unless otherwise specified, the following is applicable when determining the dimensions and clearances:
a) the chain-saw shall be kept in the upright position;
b) forces applied to the gauges shall not exceed 10 N;

1 Domaine d'application
La présente Norme internationale spécifie les dimensions et les dégagements applicables aux protecteurs de la
main tenant la poignée avant des scies à chaîne portatives. Ces dimensions et dégagements permettent de
garantir la sécurité nécessaire de ces protecteurs, qui servent à la fois de boucliers entre la main de l’opérateur et
la chaîne, et de déclencheurs des freins de chaîne à commande manuelle. La présente Norme internationale ne
s’applique pas aux scies à chaîne à poignée enveloppante.
2 Référence normative
Le document normatif suivant contient des dispositions qui, par suite de la référence qui y est faite, constituent des
dispositions valables pour la présente Norme internationale. Pour les références datées, les amendements

3 Termes et définitions
Pour les besoins de la présente Norme internationale, les termes et définitions donnés dans l'ISO 6531
s'appliquent.
4 Généralités
Les dimensions du protecteur de la main tenant la poignée avant et les dégagements doivent être adaptés à la
position prévue de la main gauche sur la poignée avant lors d’une coupe verticale (tronçonnage), et sont spécifiés
par l’utilisation de jauges définies (voir article 5).
Sauf spécification contraire, les dispositions suivantes s’appliquent pour la détermination des dimensions et des
dégagements:
a) la scie à chaîne doit être maintenue droite;
b) les forces exercées sur les jauges ne doivent pas dépasser 10 N;
