Abstract

This document specifies how to extend the ISO 32000-2:2020 specification by adding support for multi-lingual text strings for all text strings defined in PDF. This document does not specify the following: — specific processes for converting paper or electronic documents to the PDF file format; — specific technical design, user interface implementation, or operational details of rendering; — specific physical methods of storing these documents such as media and storage conditions; — methods for validating the conformance of PDF files or PDF processors; — required computer hardware and/or operating system

Overview

ISO/DTS 32009: Document management - Portable Document Format - Extension to support language identification in multilingual strings in ISO 32000-2 (PDF 2.0) is an ISO standard that specifies how to extend ISO 32000-2:2020 (PDF 2.0) by providing detailed support for language identification within multilingual text strings in PDF files. The standard enables more accurate specification of languages for all text strings defined in PDF, particularly those containing multiple languages within a single string, enhancing the management, accessibility, and interoperability of multilingual PDF documents for global use.

This extension is significant for software developers, document management professionals, and organizations producing multilingual content in PDF format. It delivers improved accuracy for language tagging in rich text objects and supports advanced document management requirements where internationalization and accessibility are essential.

Key Topics

  • Multilingual Text Objects:
The standard introduces new definitions for multilingual text objects, which are rich text strings using XML with precise language attributes. Language is assigned at the character or span level using XML’s lang attribute, allowing robust tagging even within mixed-language text entries.

  • Extension Schema:
PDF documents making use of this language identification enhancement are required to include a developer extensions dictionary with specified entries, such as BaseVersion, ExtensionLevel, and a unique URL reference, ensuring clear identification and support by PDF processors.

  • Applicability and Limitations:
ISO/DTS 32009 focuses solely on language identification for text strings in PDF files. It does not cover:

    • Conversion processes to PDF
    • Rendering or user interface designs
    • Physical storage media or conditions
    • Conformance validation methods for PDFs and processors
    • Hardware or operating systems requirements
  • Compatibility:
This extension is designed to work in conjunction with ISO 32000-2:2020 and does not replace existing mechanisms for specifying language at the document or section level but introduces more granular control over language within single strings.

Applications

  • Accessibility Compliance:
Enhanced language tagging of multilingual PDF content improves compatibility with assistive technologies, screen readers, and other accessibility tools, helping meet international accessibility standards.

  • International Content Distribution:
Organizations distributing documents in multiple languages (e.g., global companies, publishers, educational institutions) can use these extensions to ensure that language transitions within documents are properly tagged and processed.

  • Digital Archiving and Information Retrieval:
Precise language identification supports more efficient indexing, search, and retrieval of multilingual text in digital libraries and archival systems.

  • PDF Software Development:
PDF processing applications, including viewers, editors, and converters, benefit from this standard by offering improved handling and display of mixed-language content, reinforcing internationalization and user experience.

Related Standards

  • ISO 32000-2:2020 - The core PDF 2.0 specification, which this document extends.
  • ISO 3166-1:2020 - Codes for country names, referenced for country-specific language identifiers.
  • ISO/IEC 646:1991 - ISO 7-bit coded character set, relevant for encoding conventions.
  • ISO/IEC 10646:2000 - Universal coded character set (Unicode) for text encoding.
  • IETF RFC 5646 - Tags for Identifying Languages, for language code standards.
  • Adobe XML Forms Architecture (XFA) - Used for reference to rich text object capabilities in PDF.

Introduction
This document specifies a method for encoding text strings or text streams using Unicode that are found
outside of page content. These text strings and streams are generally designed to be human-readable and
hence have an associated language. While PDF includes methods for indicating the language of these strings,
this mechanism does not adequately support all scenarios and complexities, particularly when it comes to
multilingual strings where a single string contains multiple languages. Example uses for these multilingual
text objects include alternative descriptions and text in outline items (bookmarks), where the language can
change within the string or differ from that specified elsewhere in the document.
NOTE This document does not specify a method for supplying alternative text in multiple languages. Instead, it
focuses on a method for specifying the language of a single string or stream that contains text in multiple languages.
This document is an extension to ISO 32000-2:2020, defining a means of providing language identifiers
within multilingual text objects to fully specify the language for any Unicode string in a PDF.
This document is intended for developers and implementers of software that creates, consumes, or processes
PDF files.
This document is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 32000-2.
This document uses custom notation to convey additional meaning, as specified in Clause 4.
