Overview
ISO 9427:2003 is an internationally recognized standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies a precise method for determining the density of wood-based panels. This standard ensures consistency and accuracy in measuring the density of various wood panel products, which is crucial for quality control, product development, and compliance with industry requirements. The method described in ISO 9427:2003 applies to different types of wood-based panels, including particleboards, fiberboards, and plywood.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
ISO 9427:2003 focuses on defining a standardized procedure for determining the density of wood-based panels by measuring the ratio of mass to volume under controlled moisture conditions.Apparatus and Measurement Tools
The standard specifies the use of calibrated instruments including:- Micrometers with flat, circular anvils (6.0 mm to 20.0 mm diameter) for thickness measurement
- Sliding calipers or equivalent tools for measuring length and width
- Precision balances capable of measuring mass to 0.01 g accuracy
Sample Preparation and Conditioning
Test pieces must be square with nominal sides of 50 mm, conditioned to a stable moisture content (typically 65 ± 5% relative humidity and 20 ± 2 °C temperature) to reach constant mass, ensuring reproducibility of density results.Measurement Procedure
Thickness is measured at the intersection of the diagonals of each test piece, while length and width are measured at two points parallel to panel edges. The density is then calculated as mass divided by volume, with volume derived from the measured dimensions.Result Calculation and Reporting
Density results are expressed in kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m³) by averaging the densities of all measured test pieces from the same panel. The testing report must detail all relevant information including testing environment, apparatus used, panel types, and any deviations from the standard.
Applications
Quality Control in Wood Panel Manufacturing
Manufacturers use ISO 9427:2003 to monitor and maintain uniform density across production batches, ensuring product consistency and adherence to performance specifications.Product Development and Research
Accurate density measurements inform development of new wood-based panel products with targeted mechanical and physical properties, optimizing material usage and durability.Regulatory Compliance and Certification
Compliance with ISO 9427:2003 supports certification processes and demonstrates conformity with industry standards, facilitating market acceptance and customer confidence.Construction and Furniture Industry
Density is a critical property affecting strength, weight, and finish quality of wood panels used in construction, cabinetry, and furniture production, making standardized testing essential for end-use reliability.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent

ISO 9427 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 89, Wood-based panels.
This second edition is based on European Standard EN 323. It cancels and replaces the first edition
(ISO 9427:1989). The following modifications have been made compared to the first edition:
a range of anvil diameters for the thickness measurement has been specified;
the dimensions of the test pieces and the number of measuring points for thickness measurement have
been changed.

Avant-propos

une gamme de touches circulaires pour la mesure de l’épaisseur a été spécifiée;
les dimensions des éprouvettes d’essai et le nombre de points de mesure pour mesurer l’épaisseur ont
été changés.
