SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETS 300 478-2 Edition 1. It gives the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the Connectionless Network Access Protocol (CLNAP) used for Connectionless Broadband Data Service (CBDS) over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) at the User-Network Interface (UNI).

What does SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 specify?

SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 specifies how a supplier records conformance information for a CLNAP implementation. In practice, it is the questionnaire and reporting template used to declare which CLNAP capabilities, options, parameters and message formats are implemented.

The document is organized into four clauses and one normative annex:

  • Clause 1: Scope
  • Clause 2: Normative references
  • Clause 3: Definitions and abbreviations
  • Clause 4: Conformance to this ICS proforma specification
  • Annex A: PICS proforma for ETS 300 478

Annex A is the main technical part. It gives guidance for completion, identification fields for the implementation and system under test, the protocol identification, a global conformance statement, and the capability tables for CLNAP.

What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 requires the completed ICS to match the annex A proforma technically and to keep the same item numbering, names and order. That matters because conformance statements have to be comparable from one supplier to another.

How the PICS is completed

Annex A explains how each table is filled in:

  • the supplier answers each supported item explicitly
  • the status codes mark whether an item is mandatory, optional, not applicable, prohibited, qualified optional or conditional
  • the support column uses standard yes/no style answers
  • conditional answers can point to profile-dependent expressions

In practice, this is what makes the form usable in procurement and testing. A tester can read the same structure from every vendor and compare the answers directly.

What must be declared

Clause A.2 asks for identification of the implementation, the system under test, the supplier, the client and the contact person. That matters because a conformance statement must be tied to a specific product version and configuration, not just to a product name.

Clause A.4 requires a global yes/no statement on whether all mandatory capabilities are implemented. If the answer is no, the unsupported mandatory capabilities must be identified and explained. This gives a quick conformance check before the detailed tables are reviewed.

Main CLNAP capabilities

Table A.1 covers the major capabilities. It shows that sending and receiving the CLNAP PDU are mandatory, while ACE-compliant traffic shaping and CRC generation are optional. For a buyer or lab, that tells you immediately which functions are required for baseline conformance and which may vary by implementation.

Traffic shaping details

Clause A.6.1.1 and Tables A.2-A.3 cover CBDS traffic shaping. They address control of Sustained Information Rate (SIR), maximum burst length (CMAX) and Protocol Data Units per Time Unit (PPTU), together with their supported parameter ranges. In practice, this is the part to check when traffic handling limits matter for the system design.

CLNAP PDU structure

Tables A.4-A.7 describe the CLNAP PDU fields, address fields and parameter constraints. They identify the header items such as Destination Address, Source Address, HLPI, PAD Length, QOS, CIB, HEL, Reserved, Header Extension, User Information, PAD and CRC, and they constrain the allowed values for each field. That is the part a test team uses to verify that an implementation can send and receive the correct message format.

What terms does SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 define?

SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 defines several core conformance terms used in the proforma.

  • Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) - a supplier’s statement of which capabilities a claimed-to-conform implementation supports.
  • ICS proforma - the questionnaire form that becomes an ICS when completed.
  • Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) - an ICS for a specific protocol specification.
  • Implementation Under Test (IUT) - the implementation being assessed.
  • System Under Test (SUT) - the system in which the IUT resides during evaluation.
  • Protocol Data Unit (PDU) - the protocol message unit whose fields and parameters are checked.
  • Connectionless Network Access Protocol (CLNAP) - the protocol covered by this PICS proforma.
  • System Conformance Statement (SCS) - the system-level conformance statement used in multi-profile cases.

Who uses SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 is used by protocol suppliers, telecom equipment vendors, conformity assessment teams and test laboratories. It is also relevant to buyers and integrators who need a vendor declaration for CLNAP support before acceptance or interoperability testing.

In practice, the document is used when a supplier fills in the conformance questionnaire, when a lab checks a product against the declared capabilities, and when a customer compares products on the basis of declared support for CLNAP functions and parameters.

Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003?

SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 relies on four named references:

  • ETS 300 478-1 - defines CLNAP and the underlying framework that the PICS describes
  • ETS 300 406 - gives the standard methodology for protocol and profile conformance testing
  • ISO/IEC 9646-1 - provides the general conformance testing concepts
  • ISO/IEC 9646-7 - gives the rules for Implementation Conformance Statements and PICS proformas

These references matter because they define both the protocol being described and the method used to write and interpret the conformance statement.

What does the SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 document contain?

SIST ETS 300 478-2 E1:2003 contains completion guidance, identification fields, a global conformance statement, major capability tables, traffic shaping capability tables, and detailed PDU field tables. Annex A includes the actual PICS proforma structure and the tables for supported items and permitted values.

The document also includes the field-by-field breakdown of the CLNAP PDU and the address subfields, which are the parts most often checked in implementation review and conformance testing.

Annex A (normative): PICS proforma for ETS 300 478
Notwithstanding the provisions of the copyright clause related to the text of this ETS, ETSI grants that
users of this ETS may freely reproduce the PICS proforma in this annex so that it can be used for its
intended purpose and may further publish the completed PICS.
A.1 Guidance for completing the PICS proforma
A.1.1 Purposes and structure
The purpose of this PICS proforma is to provide a mechanism whereby a supplier of an implementation of
the requirements defined in ETS 300 478-1 [1] may provide information about the implementation in a
standardized manner.
The PICS proforma is subdivided into subclauses for the following categories of information:
- guidance for completing the ICS proforma;
- identification of the implementation;
- identification of the protocol;
- global statement of conformance;
- ICS proforma tables.
A.1.2 Abbreviations and conventions
The PICS proforma contained in this annex is comprised of information in tabular form in accordance with
the guidelines presented in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [4].
Item column
It contains a number which identifies the item in the table.
Item description column
It describes in free text each respective item (e.g. parameters, timers, etc.). It implicitly means "is description> supported by the implementation?".
Status column
The following notations, defined in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [4], are used for the status column:
m mandatory - the capability is required to be supported.
o optional - the capability may be supported or not.
n/a not applicable - in the given context, it is impossible to use the capability.
x prohibited (excluded) - there is a requirement not to use this capability in the
given context.
o.i qualified optional - for mutually exclusive or selectable options from a set. "i" is
an integer which identifies an unique group of related optional items and the
logic of their selection which is defined immediately following the table.
ci conditional - the requirement on the capability ("m", "o", "x" or "n/a") depends on
the support of other optional or conditional items. "i" is an integer identifying an
unique conditional status expression which is defined immediately following the
table.
Page 10
