33 FOREWORD
34 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
35 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
36 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
37 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
38 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
39 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
40 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
41 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
42 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
43 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
44 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
45 interested IEC National Committees.
46 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
47 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
48 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
49 misinterpretation by any end user.
50 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
51 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
52 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
53 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
54 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
55 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
56 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
57 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
58 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
59 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
60 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
61 Publications.
62 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
63 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
64 9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
65 patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
66 respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
67 may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
68 the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
69 shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
70 IEC 61290-1-2 has been prepared by subcommittee 86C: Fibre optic systems and active
71 devices, of IEC technical committee 86: Fibre optics. It is an International Standard.
72 This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. This edition
73 constitutes a technical revision.
74 This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous
75 edition:
76 a) Information on the applicability of this document is added to the scope;
77 b) The scope is harmonized with the IEC 61290-1 series;
78 c) Safety recommendations are added to Clauses 4 and 5;
4 IEC CDV 61290-1-2 ED3 © IEC 2025
79 d) An error is corrected in Clause 7, item e);
80 e) The term "wavelength measurement accuracy" is replaced with “wavelength accuracy”.
81 The text of this International Standard is based on the following documents:
Draft Report on voting

83 Full information on the voting for its approval can be found in the report on voting indicated in
84 the above table.
85 The language used for the development of this International Standard is English.
86 A list of all parts in the IEC 61290 series, published under the general title Optical amplifiers -
87 Test methods, can be found on the IEC website.

99 OPTICAL AMPLIFIERS – TEST METHODS –
101 Part 1-2: Power and gain parameters –
102 Electrical spectrum analyzer method
105 1 Scope
106 This part of IEC 61290 applies to all commercially available optical amplifiers (OAs) and
107 optically amplified sub-systems. It applies to OAs using optically pumped fibres (OFAs based
108 on either rare-earth doped fibres or on the Raman effect), semiconductors (SOAs), and planar
109 optical waveguides (POWAs). This document does not apply to polarization-maintaining optical
110 amplifiers.
111 The object of this document is to establish uniform requirements for accurate and reliable
112 measurements, by means of the electrical spectrum analyzer test method, of the following OA
113 parameters, as defined in IEC 61291-1, Clause 3:
114 a) nominal output signal power;
115 b) gain;
116 c) reverse gain;
117 d) maximum gain;
118 e) polarization-dependent gain.
119 In addition, this test method provides a means for measuring the following parameters:
120 – maximum gain wavelength;
121 – gain wavelength band.
122 The object of this document is specifically directed to single-channel amplifiers. For
123 multichannel amplifiers, the IEC 61290-10 series applies.
124 NOTE 1 The applicability of the test methods described in this document to distributed Raman amplifiers is for further
125 study.
126 NOTE 2 A test method for polarization-maintaining optical amplifiers is for further study.
127 2 Normative references
128 The following documents are referred to in the text in such a way that some or all of their content
129 constitutes requirements of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies.
130 For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any
131 amendments) applies.
