SIST EN 641:1996
(Main)Reinforced concrete pressure pipes, cylinder type, including joints and fittings
- Abstract
This European Standard specifies the requirements and manufacture of reinforced concrete pressure pipe cylinder type, that is not prestressed, in sizes from DN/ID 250 to DN/ID 4000 inclusive. Pretensioned concrete cylinder pipe, in whichthe reinforcement is wrapped, under low tension, directly on to the steel cylinder is covered by this standard and is not normally manufactured in sizes above DN/ID 1400. Larger sizes can be manufactured based on the concepts of thisstandard.

SIST EN 641:1996 is the SIST standard for reinforced concrete pressure pipes, cylinder type, including joints and fittings. It specifies the requirements and manufacture for non-prestressed reinforced concrete pressure pipe in sizes from DN/ID 250 to DN/ID 4000, and it also covers pretensioned concrete cylinder pipe made by wrapping reinforcement under low tension directly onto the steel cylinder.
What does SIST EN 641:1996 specify?
SIST EN 641:1996 specifies the product type, size range and manufacturing concept for reinforced concrete pressure pipes of cylinder type. It covers the pipe itself, together with joints and fittings, so the document can be used when a complete pressure-pipe system is being specified.
The scope is practical rather than generic: it fixes the pipe family to cylinder type reinforced concrete pressure pipe, identifies the normal size range, and notes that larger sizes can be manufactured based on the same concepts. For a buyer or designer, that means the standard is useful when selecting or checking pressure pipe for a project that needs this construction method and diameter range.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 641:1996?
The main points in SIST EN 641:1996 are the product definition, the permitted construction forms, and the diameter range.
- Cylinder type only - The standard is written for reinforced concrete pressure pipes of cylinder type. In practice, users need to make sure the pipe design matches this construction, not another concrete pressure-pipe form.
- Not prestressed - The scope states that the reinforced concrete pressure pipe is not prestressed. This matters because the structural concept and the way the pipe is made must match the standard’s intended product.
- Pretensioned concrete cylinder pipe is covered - The standard also covers pretensioned concrete cylinder pipe where the reinforcement is wrapped, under low tension, directly onto the steel cylinder. This is important for manufacturers and purchasers because that specific build-up is still within the document’s scope.
- Size range DN/ID 250 to DN/ID 4000 - The standard applies to this range of nominal inside diameters. In practice, a specification can use the standard for pipes inside that range without needing to reinterpret the product family.
- Joints and fittings are included - The title and scope both include joints and fittings. That means the pipe system is not treated as a bare pipe only; the connecting and special pieces belong to the same standard.
- Larger sizes may be made using the same concepts - The scope notes that larger sizes can be manufactured based on the concepts of the standard. For project teams, this signals that the document can inform special designs beyond the normal size range, even when the size is larger than DN/ID 4000.
Who uses SIST EN 641:1996?
SIST EN 641:1996 is used by manufacturers of reinforced concrete pressure pipes, and by designers, specifiers, buyers and inspectors who need a common basis for cylinder-type pressure pipe systems. It is relevant in pressure-pipe projects where the pipe construction, size range and associated joints or fittings must be defined consistently.
In practice, manufacturers use it to shape the product design and production method. Buyers and project engineers use it to describe the pipe they want, compare offers, and check that delivered products match the specified pipe type and size range.
What changed in SIST EN 641:1996 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 641:1996 is identical to EN 641:1994.
What does the SIST EN 641:1996 document contain?
The document contains the requirements and manufacturing basis for reinforced concrete pressure pipes, cylinder type, including joints and fittings. Its front matter identifies the standard in Slovenian, German and French, and classifies it under ICS 23.040.50, which places it with pipes and fittings of other materials.
For a user, the document is the reference for defining the pipe family, checking the intended construction concept, and confirming the applicable size range. It is therefore useful for product specification, procurement, manufacturing control and acceptance of cylinder-type reinforced concrete pressure pipe systems.
