Overview
SIST EN 60371-3-8:1998 standard, published by CLC, specifies the requirements for mica paper tapes used as electrical insulating materials in flame-resistant security cables. These insulating tapes, supplied in sheets or rolls with nominal thickness between 0.05 mm and 0.15 mm, are crucial in the construction of fire-resistant cables to ensure their integrity and operational continuity during fire incidents. The document defines the material composition, mechanical properties, and other quality requirements to assure consistent performance suited to high-reliability electrical installations.
Key Topics
- Mica-Based Insulation: The standard covers mica paper combined with glass fabric or plastic film and impregnated with suitable resin, providing superior flame-resistant and insulating properties.
- Material Configuration: Supplied as flexible tapes or sheets, the standard allows for varying product types, thicknesses, and widths to accommodate diverse cable designs.
- Composition & Tolerance: Detailed tables outline the acceptable mass per area of mica, glass, film, and resin, along with thickness tolerances for different tape types. Both muscovite and phlogopite mica variants are included.
- Physical Requirements:
- Uniform tape surface, free from defects (e.g., bubbles or pinholes)
- Consistent tensile strength in both warp and weft directions
- Controlled width, thickness, and allowable joins per roll
- Performance & Reliability: While the standard itself does not stipulate a flame resistance test, it is recognized that these mica tapes, when used in properly designed cables, contribute to achieving the fire survival criteria as per IEC 331.
Applications
- Security & Safety Cables: Mica paper tapes specified in EN 60371-3-8 are integral to flame-resistant and fire survival cables used in safety-critical environments, such as:
- Emergency circuits in public buildings
- Transport infrastructure (subways, tunnels, airports)
- Industrial facilities requiring maintained electrical supply during fire events
- Electrical Insulation for High-Reliability Systems: These tapes ensure electrical insulation remains intact under high temperatures, supporting continued operation of alarms, power supply, and emergency lighting.
- Construction & Energy Distribution: Used in cables installed where fire performance and safety compliance are mandatory.
- Customization for Project Needs: The standard allows selection of specific tape widths, lengths, and impregnation materials, enabling manufacturers and specifiers to tailor insulation solutions for unique project requirements.
Related Standards
- IEC 60371-1: Provides definitions and general requirements for mica-based insulating materials.
- IEC 60371-2: Details test methods for verifying the compliance and performance of insulating tapes and sheets.
- IEC 60371-3 Series: Covers additional specifications for various types of individual mica-based insulating materials.
- IEC 331: Specifies fire survival characteristics for cables, relevant for the intended application of these mica paper tapes in security cables.
Practical Value
Adhering to SIST EN 60371-3-8:1998 guarantees that flame-resistant mica paper tapes meet international quality and performance benchmarks, helping organizations and cable manufacturers:
- Achieve Regulatory Compliance: Meet fire safety standards for electrical installations as required by building codes and industrial regulations.
- Ensure Safety & Continuity: Support uninterrupted operation of critical infrastructure during fire emergencies through reliable, certified insulation.
- Streamline Procurement: Enable straightforward product selection and ordering based on clear, internationally recognized specification codes.
- Facilitate Quality Assurance: Standardized production and testing minimize risk of failure and enhance long-term reliability in demanding environments.
By specifying mica paper tapes for flame-resistant security cables in accordance with this standard, stakeholders in construction, manufacturing, and facility management secure enhanced safety and resilience in essential electrical systems.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
3) They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter. The text of this standard is based on the following documents:
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
International Standard IEC 371-3-8 has been prepared by sub-committee 15C: Speci-
fications, of IEC technical committee 15: Insulating materials.

1 Scope
This International Standard specifies the requirements for an electrical insulating material
containing mica paper with glass fabric or plastic film and impregnated with a suitable
resin. The material is supplied in a flexible state. It may be supplied in the form of sheets
or rolls. The product is designed for use in cables capable of operating after a fire.
This specification covers material having a nominal thickness from 0,05 mm to 0,15 mm.
Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of pe rformance.
