SIST ETS 300 336:1998 is the Slovenian adoption of ETS 300 336, an ETSI European Telecommunication Standard for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) signalling. It specifies detailed tests for Signalling System No.7 (SS7) Message Transfer Part (MTP) level 2 and level 3, so implementers can validate nodes against the protocol in ETS 300 008-1 and the test rules in ITU-T Recommendation Q.780. The document is a modified version of ITU-T Recommendations Q.781 and Q.782 (1993).

What does SIST ETS 300 336:1998 specify?

SIST ETS 300 336:1998 specifies a set of detailed tests for MTP level 2 and level 3. In practice, these tests are used to check that an implementation behaves correctly in link control, message handling, congestion handling, and route management scenarios.

The standard is organized as a global modifications section followed by specific modifications to tests taken from ITU-T Recommendation Q.781 and ITU-T Recommendation Q.782. Those modified tests form the main technical content.

The scope states that the tests are intended to validate the protocol specified in ETS 300 008-1 and that the standard follows the basic test rules of ITU-T Recommendation Q.780, while adding level-specific principles for level 2 and level 3.

What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 336:1998?

The standard’s practical content is a set of conformance-style test cases. Each test defines the setup, the message sequence, and the expected response, so a laboratory can check whether a node enters the right state, sends the right signalling messages, and preserves traffic correctly.

Link state control and alignment

Tests 1.5 and 1.7 in the Q.781 modifications check normal alignment and the response during the proving period. They verify that a link moves into “In service” correctly and reacts properly when an SIO is received during proving.

For a tester, this means checking the transition into service, not just that messages are exchanged. The tests also include VAT-specific checks with different LSSU status field lengths.

Processor outage and signal unit handling

Test 4.1 covers setting and clearing LPO while the link is in service. It checks that the implementation discards traffic during outage and flushes old buffered messages after recovery.

Test 5.3 checks signal unit delimitation, alignment, and error detection when a received signal unit is below the minimum length. In practice, this confirms that corrupted traffic is rejected and that the link remains stable when a correct FISU arrives afterward.

Test 9.7 checks MSU transmission while RPO is set and whether retransmission stops correctly without false link-failure detection.

Route management and congestion control

Test 2.3 in the Q.782 modifications checks reception of a message with an erroneous SI. The point is to confirm that invalid distribution information does not disturb traffic, apart from the possible UPU response mentioned in the test.

Test 3.21 covers changeover on reception of COO or ECO. It checks that traffic is moved to the available link without loss, duplication, or missequencing, which is the key operational risk in live networks.

Test 4.5 and 4.11 cover changeback behavior. They verify repeated CBD handling, timing of T4 and T5, and time-controlled diversion when a route has to be restored or rerouted.

Test 8.2 covers signalling traffic flow control. It checks that congestion detection triggers TFC messages and that traffic resumes normally once the load drops.

Signalling route management and invalid messages

Tests 9.1.1 and 9.1.2 check transfer prohibited handling on alternative routes, including TFP and TFA behavior and timeout T8. These tests matter because route failures must be announced and traffic diverted consistently across the network.

Tests 13.7 and 13.8 cover unusual invalid TFA, TFP, and RST messages. The expected result is that such messages are discarded without disturbing traffic, which is important for resilience against malformed signalling.

What terms does SIST ETS 300 336:1998 define?

  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) - the digital network environment in which the signalling tests are applied.
  • Signalling System No.7 (SS7) - the signalling system whose MTP behavior is exercised by the tests.
  • Message Transfer Part (MTP) - the SS7 transport and routing part under test at levels 2 and 3.
  • Fill-In Signal Unit (FISU) - a signal unit used in the tests to maintain link supervision when there is no message traffic.
  • Message Signal Unit (MSU) - a signal unit carrying signalling messages, used throughout the tests to check delivery and retransmission.
  • Transfer Prohibited (TFP) - a route-management message used to block traffic toward an unavailable destination.
  • Transfer Controlled (TFC) - a congestion-control message used to report level 3 congestion.

Who uses SIST ETS 300 336:1998?

SIST ETS 300 336:1998 is used by SS7 and ISDN equipment designers, protocol implementers, and conformance test laboratories. It is also relevant to network operators, quality managers, and buyers who need to verify that a node implementing T/S 43-01 behaves correctly under link failures, congestion, and route changes.

In practice, teams use it for validation, interoperability checking, and acceptance testing of signalling nodes and signalling links.

Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 336:1998?

The document relies on ETS 300 008-1 for the MTP protocol specification being tested. That reference tells the reader what protocol behavior the tests are validating.

It also relies on ITU-T Recommendation Q.780 for the general description of SS7 test specification rules. The modified tests themselves refer repeatedly to Q.701, Q.702, Q.703, Q.704, and Q.707 as modified by ETS 300 008-1, because those parts define the protocol behavior being exercised.

What does the SIST ETS 300 336:1998 document contain?

The document contains step-by-step test definitions with pre-test conditions, configurations, message sequences, and expected results. The modified tests show how to drive a node through alignment, proving, outage, congestion, changeover, changeback, and invalid-message cases.

Many tests include message-sequence diagrams and references to figures from Q.703 and Q.704. For a lab, that means the document is not just descriptive - it provides the exact interaction pattern to reproduce during verification.

It also includes timing checks such as T4, T5, T7, T8, T21, and T3 where those timers are part of the expected behavior. That helps test engineers confirm not only the final state, but also that the transition happens within the intended protocol timing.

specifications, however, it contains additional general principles specific to level 2 and level 3 tests,
respectively.

5. Check A flushed its buffer and no old MSU is sent.
6. Generate an MSU at B.
7. Check A receives the MSU and responds correctly.
