Overview
EN 61937-12:2010 (equivalent to IEC 61937-12:2010) defines how to carry non‑linear PCM audio bitstreams encoded in the DRA formats over the digital audio interface specified by IEC 60958. In practical terms, this part of the EN/IEC 61937 family describes the packet (data‑burst) structure, timing, and signalling needed so DRA‑encoded streams can be transmitted, detected and decoded across consumer and professional digital audio links.
Keywords: EN 61937-12:2010, IEC 61937-12, DRA formats, IEC 60958, digital audio interface, non-linear PCM, burst-info, data-burst.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Specifies the method for IEC 60958 to convey DRA (Digital Rise Audio) non‑linear PCM bitstreams.
- Burst-info and data-type: Defines a 16‑bit burst‑info (Pc) field and assigns the DRA data‑type/sub‑data‑type (data‑type = 23, sub‑data‑type = 3).
- Data‑burst format: Each DRA audio data‑burst comprises a burst‑preamble, a burst‑payload containing one complete DRA frame, and stuffing bits to fill IEC 60958 frames.
- Frame size and samples: A DRA data‑burst payload represents 1 024 samples per encoded channel; length-code (Pd) units are in bytes.
- Sampling‑rate relation: Bits 8–9 of Pc identify the relation between DRA sampling frequency and the IEC 60958 frame rate:
- 00 = regular rate (repetition period 1 024 IEC 60958 frames)
- 01 = half‑rate low sampling frequency (2 048 frames)
- 10 = quarter‑rate low sampling frequency (4 096 frames)
- 11 = reserved
- Pause data‑bursts: Recommended repetition periods for pause bursts are 32, 64 or 128 IEC 60958 frames depending on the sampling‑rate relation.
- Latency signalling: The standard defines the notion of decoding latency (sum of receive and decode delays) and requires transmitters to schedule bursts considering latency to maintain AV sync.
- Normative references: The document references IEC 60958, IEC 61937 (parts 1 & 2) and points to the DRA frame specification (e.g., GB/T 22726‑2008).
Practical applications
- Interoperability of DRA‑encoded audio over S/PDIF or AES3 links that follow IEC 60958 framing
- Implementation guidance for audio interface firmware, digital audio transmitters, and decoder front‑ends
- Design of consumer electronics (set‑top boxes, DVD/Blu‑ray players), broadcast encoders and professional audio equipment that need to carry DRA streams
- Test labs and conformance testing for digital audio transport and synchronization
Who should use this standard
- Audio equipment manufacturers and hardware engineers
- Codec and DSP developers implementing DRA encoders/decoders
- System integrators and firmware developers for digital audio interfaces
- Test laboratories and standards compliance teams
Related standards
- IEC 60958 (Digital audio interface)
- IEC 61937-1 (General) and IEC 61937-2 (Burst‑info)
- DRA format specification (e.g., GB/T 22726‑2008)
This standard is essential when transporting DRA non‑linear PCM over IEC 60958 interfaces to ensure correct framing, timing, latency handling and interoperability.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
