SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 is a SIST standard based on ETSI EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2. It specifies the Message Transfer Part (MTP) protocol of Signalling System No.7 (SS7) for Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) international interconnection, with rules that matter to network engineers, equipment suppliers, and conformance testers.
What does SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 specify?
SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 defines the MTP protocol for use in the international network and, optionally, in public networks. It is not intended to restrict national networks.
The document is organized as a short set of clauses that apply modifications to ITU-T Recommendations Q.701 to Q.708, followed by a normative annex with specific signalling link loading requirements.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| ZA (normative) | Specific requirements for signalling link loading, including the definition of load, normal-operation maximum, abnormal-condition minimum, message-length influence, and a graphic representation. |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004?
SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 is a profile of the Q.70x MTP recommendations, so the main task for implementers is to apply the ETSI modifications rather than the base ITU-T text alone.
- No national options apply. Clause 4.1 removes national options and remarks about them. In practice, equipment and network planning for this profile should follow one common set of rules.
- Signalling data links use a 64 kbit/s bit rate. Clause 4.2 also says that if an analogue transmission path is used, any digital-to-analogue or analogue-to-digital conversion is placed on the multiplexed transmission link after interface point C. That matters when designing the transport path and the interface boundaries.
- Only Network Indicator value 00 is used. Clause 4.3 limits the Network Indicator, so signalling implementations should not rely on other values for this profile.
- MTP restart behavior is clarified. Clause 5 says that when restart ends, after the TRA messages have been broadcast, the MTP indicates the end of restart to local MTP Users and shows each signalling point as accessible or inaccessible. This is important for network state handling after recovery.
- Q.703 timer use is narrowed. Clause 6 keeps the Q.703 timer set, but several named timers for 4,8 kbit/s do not apply, and the error correction method selection criteria are updated. The practical effect is that implementers need to check timer behavior against this profile, especially for propagation delay and satellite links.
- Q.704 is also restricted. Clause 7 keeps only the basic signalling link management functions from subclause 12.2, and it says other subclauses in that block do not apply. It also ties SI values and user part identity field values to the Master list of codepoints, and reserves certain H1 codes for ITU-T Recommendation Q.2210.
- Q.705 screening and Q.706 normative text are addressed. Clause 8 says the screening method in Q.705 8.2 ii) does not apply, while clause 9 says there are no changes to Q.706 normative material. That helps readers separate actual requirements from background guidance.
- Annex ZA defines signalling link loading. Annex ZA explains how to calculate link load from MSU bits transferred at level 2, excluding retransmitted MSUs, FISUs and LSSUs. It also distinguishes normal-operation maximum load from minimum handling capability during abnormal conditions, which is the basis for network dimensioning, planning, and performance checks.
What terms does SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 define?
SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 uses a small set of abbreviations that are central to the protocol.
- ISDN - Integrated Services Digital Network, the service environment named in the title and scope.
- MTP - Message Transfer Part, the SS7 protocol part defined by this standard.
- LSSU - Link Status Signal Unit, a link-status message excluded from the load calculation in Annex ZA.
- MSU - Message Signal Unit, the main signalling message counted in link load calculations.
- SIF - Signalling Information Field, the information-bearing field used in the link-loading graphic.
- SIO - Service Information Octet, the field paired with SIF in the Annex ZA loading graphic.
- SP - Signalling Point, the network node referenced in restart and accessibility handling.
- TRA - Traffic Restart Allowed message, used in the restart procedure described in clause 5.
Who uses SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004?
SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 is used by telecommunications equipment vendors, network operators, and test laboratories working with SS7 and ISDN interconnection. It is also relevant to planners and quality teams who need to check restart behavior, timer use, codepoint assignments, and signalling link loading.
What changed in SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 from the previous edition?
The foreword says this version incorporates agreements made at ITU-T since the last formal issue of the Q.70x Recommendations. The document history shows the earlier ETS 300 008-1 V1.3.1 publication and the later V1.3.2 publication.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004?
The document is built around these referenced or companion texts:
- ITU-T Q.701 to Q.708 - the base MTP recommendations that are modified by this standard.
- ITU-T E.733 - guidance for choosing between basic and PCR error correction.
- ITU-T Q.2210 - provides the MTP-3b context for reserved H1 codes.
- ETSI EG 201 693 - the Master list of codepoints used for SI values and user part identity field values.
- Part 2 of the deliverable - the Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma specification that supports conformance work.
What does the SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 document contain?
SIST EN 300 008-1 V1.3.2:2004 contains targeted modifications to the Q.701 to Q.708 material, not a full rewrite of SS7 MTP. It includes timer and method adjustments, link-management restrictions, codepoint references, and restart behavior. Annex ZA adds a normative loading model with a figure that relates MSU rate to SIF+SIO load across the message-length range. The document also carries a bibliography item for Q.709 and a history section that records the publication path.
