ETSI ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1 (2008-05) - Open Service Access (OSA); Parlay X Web Services; Part 20: Multimedia Multicast Session Management (Parlay X 3)
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 is an ETSI standard for Open Service Access (OSA) Parlay X Web Services, Part 20. It specifies the Multimedia Multicast Session Management Web Service for application developers and other third parties that need to create, control, query, and monitor multicast sessions through the OSA APIs.
What does SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 specify?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 specifies the Multimedia Multicast Session Management Web Service as part 20 of the Stage 3 Parlay X 3 Web Services specification for OSA. It defines the web-service interface, the data exchanged, the notification flow, the faults used by the service, and the WSDL representation.
The service is organized around three interfaces:
- Multicast for session and participant management
- MulticastNotificationManager for setting up and ending notifications
- MulticastNotification for delivering join, leave, error, and end events
The scope also points readers to Part 19 for control of the multimedia stream associated with a multicast session, such as start, stop, pause, and resume.

| Annex A | Normative WSDL for Multimedia Multicast Session Management |
| Annex B | Informative bibliography |
What are the key requirements of SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 defines how an application creates, manages, and monitors multicast sessions. In practice, this means the application can create a session, invite users, see who is participating, and receive events when participation changes.
Service model and interfaces
Clause 4 states that the web service lets a third party control a multicast session, its members, and obtain channel presence information. The service is split into the three interfaces listed in the scope, so implementers can separate session control from notification setup and notification delivery.
Clause 5 assigns distinct namespaces to each interface and to the data types. This matters for WSDL and XML interoperability, because client and server implementations must use the same qualified names.
Session and participant handling
Clause 6 gives sequence diagrams for the main use cases: create, delete, retrieve session information, invite users to join, request users to leave, query session participants, and handle channel presence notifications. These diagrams show the order of messages, which is useful when implementing request-response flows and asynchronous callbacks.
Clause 8.1 defines the Multicast interface:
createMulticastSessioncreates a session and returns the session address, i.e. the IP address.deleteMulticastSessionremoves an existing session.getMulticastSessionInformationreturns the stored session information.inviteUsersToJoinsends invitations to one or more users or user groups.requestUsersToLeaveasks one or more users or user groups to leave.querySessionParticipantsreturns the users currently participating in a session.querySessionForUserreturns the session address for a given user.
In practice, these operations define the minimum control set for a multicast application. An implementer must be able to create a session, identify it by address, and track who is currently joined or requested to leave.
Notifications and correlation
Clause 8.2 defines the MulticastNotificationManager interface. startNotification sets a trigger for join and leave changes for specified users or groups, and it uses a correlator so later notifications can be matched to the original request. The request can also limit notification frequency, duration, and count according to service policy.
This matters because notification handling is not free-form. The service provider can enforce limits, and the application must be prepared to specify a reference, timing constraints, and an optional notification count.
endNotification stops an active notification. Clause 8.2 states that notifications may continue until the operation completes, and that a final end notification is not delivered when the application ends the notification deliberately.
Clause 8.3 defines the MulticastNotification interface. It delivers:
notifyJoinMulticastSessionnotifyLeaveMulticastSessionnotifyErrornotifyEnd
These operations report user joins, user leaves, notification cancellation by the Web Service, and normal completion of the notification period. For implementers, this is the asynchronous part of the service that keeps the application informed without polling.
Data types and status values
Clause 7 defines the XML Schema data types used by the service. SessionInformation carries the session name and optional charging information, bandwidth, multimedia type, session duration, and description. UserInformation carries a user identifier and a status.
This is important because it shows what the service can return and what the application can store or display about each session. The MultimediaType and UserStatus enumerations control the allowed values for media type and participation state.
Faults and service policy
Clause 9 states that there are no service-specific fault definitions. The operations therefore rely on the referenced faults named inside the interface clauses.
Clause 10 defines service policies for notification limits and group behavior. It includes limits for the number of notification addresses, notification frequency, notification duration, and count, plus flags for unlimited count, group support, and nested group support. In practice, these policy items tell an implementer what the service may allow or reject when setting up notifications.
What terms does SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 define?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 defines the following terms in Clause 3.
- Multicast joining - the process by which a user joins a multicast group.
- Multicast session - the group used to provide the same multicast service to users who join it.
- Multicast service - a unidirectional point-to-multipoint service where data is sent from one source to a multicast group.
- Member - a user who becomes part of a multicast group after joining it.
- Channel presence information - attributes that describe a multicast session, including user identifiers and the session they are participating in.
- Broadcast Multicast Service Centre (BM-SC) - a network component abbreviation listed among the service abbreviations.
- Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Service (MBMS) - the broadcast/multicast service abbreviation used in the document.
- Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) - the IPTV abbreviation listed in Clause 3.2.
Who uses SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 is used by application developers, service integrators, and telecom platform engineers who expose or consume OSA APIs. It is relevant when an application needs to create multicast sessions, invite participants, monitor joins and leaves, or receive notifications about channel presence.
It also fits network environments described in the document, including GPRS Packet network or IP Multicast Network scenarios. That makes it useful for services such as personal broadcasting, multicast media delivery, and related presence-driven applications.
What changed in SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 from the previous edition?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 is identified as equivalent to 3GPP TS 29.199-20 V7.0.2, Release 7. The document history shows publication in 2008 as an ETSI Standard in the Parlay X 3.0 set.
Which standards are used with SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 depends on and is used with these referenced standards:
- W3C Recommendation XML Schema Part 2: Datatypes - provides the XML Schema datatypes used in the service schema.
- ETSI ES 202 504-1, Open Service Access (OSA); Parlay X Web Services; Part 1: Common (Parlay X 3) - supplies shared OSA and Parlay X definitions and common types.
- ETSI ES 202 504-19, Open Service Access (OSA); Parlay X Web Services; Part 19: Multimedia Streaming Control (Parlay X 3) - provides the stream-control operations associated with a multicast session.
What does the SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 document contain?
SIST ES 202 504-20 V1.1.1:2008 contains sequence diagrams for the main multicast-session use cases, XML Schema data-type definitions, and detailed Web Service interface definitions. Clause 7 includes schema tables for SessionInformation, UserInformation, MultimediaType, and UserStatus.
Clause 8 breaks each operation into input and output messages and lists referenced faults where relevant. It also defines notification setup, notification delivery, and the correlator used to match requests to asynchronous events.
Annex A provides the normative WSDL in accompanying text files, so implementers can generate or validate service bindings directly. Annex B gives a short bibliography for related MBMS, UMTS, and IGMP material.
