IEC 60794-1-218:2025 defines test procedures to establish uniform requirements for the environmental performance of:
- optical fibre cables for telecommunication equipment and devices employing similar techniques, and
- cables having a combination of both optical fibres and electrical conductors.
Throughout this document, the wording "optical cable" can also include optical fibre units, microduct fibre units, etc.
This document defines a test standard to determine the ability of optical cable elements from a cable exposed in a mid-span entry (expressed) and stored in a pedestal, closure or similar to withstand the effects of temperature cycling by observing changes in attenuation. The optical cable element bundles up single or multiple optical fibres, e.g. loose tube, tight buffer tube, or optical fibre ribbon.

This first edition partially cancels and replaces the second edition of IEC 60794-1-22 published in 2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to IEC 60794‑1‑22:2017:
a) extension of the test method scope to apply to any optical cables with optical cable elements including loose tubes, tight buffer tubes, and ribbons, exposed in a mid-span entry (expressed) and stored in a pedestal, closure, or similar;
b) modification of the test method title according to item a);
c) deletion of the tube diameter requirement for the test object;
d) modification of the default temperature range according to IEC 60794-1-1;
e) addition of the default coiled turns in the assembly during the test.

IEC 60794-1-218: 2025 définit les procédures d’essai utilisées afin d'établir des exigences uniformes applicables aux performances environnementales:
- des câbles à fibres optiques pour les équipements de télécommunications et dispositifs utilisant des techniques analogues; et
- des câbles constitués de fibres optiques d'une part et de conducteurs électriques d'autre part.
Dans le présent document, l'expression "câble optique" peut également inclure des assemblages de fibres optiques, des assemblages de fibres pour microconduits, etc.
Le présent document définit une norme d'essai en vue de déterminer la capacité des éléments de câbles optiques d'un câble exposé dans un accès à mi-portée (traversants) et stockés dans une borne, un boîtier ou un dispositif analogue, à résister aux effets des cycles de température en observant les variations de l'affaiblissement. L’élément de câble optique regroupe en faisceau une ou plusieurs fibres optiques, par exemple tube à structure lâche, tube à revêtement de protection serré ou ruban de fibres optiques.

Cette première édition annule et remplace partiellement la deuxième édition de l'IEC 60794­1­22 parue en 2017. Cette édition constitue une révision technique.
Cette édition inclut les modifications techniques majeures suivantes par rapport à l’IEC 60794‑1‑22:2017:
a) Élargissement du domaine d'application, la méthode d'essai étant applicable à tous les câbles optiques équipés d'éléments de câbles optiques, y compris les tubes à structure lâche, les tubes à revêtement de protection serré et les rubans, exposés dans un accès à mi-portée (traversants) et stockés dans une borne, un boîtier ou dispositif analogue;
b) modification du titre de la méthode d'essai conformément au point a);
c) suppression de l’exigence pour le diamètre du tube concernant l’objet d’essai;
d) modification de la plage de températures par défaut conformément à l’IEC 60794-1-1;
e) ajout de spires enroulées par défaut dans le montage pendant l'essai.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
