SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005 is the Slovene adoption of ETSI EN 301 344 version 6.7.1. It specifies the Stage 2 service description for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) in GSM Phase 2+, describing how GPRS is organized across the mobile station (MS), Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN), Home Location Register (HLR), and related GSM functions. It is written for GSM/GPRS network operators, system integrators, and equipment implementers who need the service model and control procedures.
What does SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005 specify?
SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005 defines the GPRS service at stage 2 level. It covers the network functions, logical architecture, signalling, mobility management, packet routeing, security, charging, and interworking needed to deliver packet data over GSM.
The scope is limited to the service description. The document does not cover the lower layers of the GPRS GSM radio interface; those are handled in other GSM specifications.
The document is organized into clauses 1 to 16, followed by five annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | APN and GGSN selection |
| Annex B | Data transmission routeing examples |
| Annex C | Figures |
| Annex D | Tables |
| Annex E | Document history |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005?
Network access, attachment, and mobility
Clause 5 defines the main GPRS functions, and clause 6 defines how an MS moves through GPRS mobility states. The standard uses IDLE, STANDBY, and READY states, and it also defines a reduced anonymous-access state model. In practice, this tells implementers when the MS can transmit data, when it can be paged, and when the network must retain location and routeing context.
Clause 6.5 specifies GPRS attach. An MS must attach before it can use GPRS service, and the attach procedure establishes MM contexts in the MS and SGSN. The procedure also handles combined GPRS/IMSI attach when the network uses coordinated paging.
Clause 6.6 and 6.7 define detach and purge. Detach removes the MS from service, and purge lets the SGSN inform the HLR that contexts for a detached MS have been deleted. Operationally, this is how the network frees state and keeps subscriber records consistent.
Packet data and routeing control
Clause 9 describes Packet Data Protocol (PDP) context activation, modification, and deactivation. The MS must activate a PDP context before user data can flow to or from an external packet data network, and the context binds the MS to the selected PDP address and routeing path. This is the core control step for starting and stopping packet sessions.
Clause 5 and clause 9 also define the routeing, relay, encapsulation, tunnelling, compression, and Domain Name Server functions. In practice, these functions let GPRS carry external IP or X.25 traffic through the GSM PLMN without exposing the internal network structure to the user.
Radio, signalling, and service coordination
Clause 12 defines the transmission and signalling planes, including GTP, LLC, SNDCP, BSSGP, NS, and RLC/MAC. These layers tell the reader how data and signalling move between the MS, BSS, SGSN, and GGSN, and which parts handle reliability, flow control, and radio access.
Clause 6.3 defines interaction with MSC/VLR when the optional Gs interface is present. It covers combined RA/LA updating, circuit-switched paging via the SGSN, non-GPRS alert, MS Information, and MM Information. In practice, this reduces duplicate updates and lets a GPRS-attached MS still receive circuit-switched service coordination.
Clause 6.8 defines security. GPRS uses GSM-style authentication, identity confidentiality through temporary identities, and ciphering for user data and GMM/SM signalling. The SGSN performs the security procedures, so operators and vendors must implement them in the packet core rather than at the MSC.
What terms does SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005 define?
- Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN) - The node that serves the MS, keeps track of its location, and performs mobility, security, and access-control functions.
- Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) - The node that connects the GPRS PLMN to external packet data networks and holds routeing information for attached users.
- Packet Data Protocol (PDP) - The packet data address context used to route user data, for example IP or X.25.
- Packet TMSI (P-TMSI) - A temporary identity used to identify a GPRS user in place of the IMSI.
- Routeing Area Identity (RAI) - The identity used to describe the routeing area for mobility management.
- Temporary Logical Link Identity (TLLI) - The GPRS user identity used on the radio link and derived from the P-TMSI or built by the MS.
- GPRS Mobility Management and Session Management (GMM/SM) - The signalling protocol that handles attach, detach, security, routeing area update, and PDP context procedures.
Who uses SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005?
GSM/GPRS network operators use this standard to design service behavior, roaming support, paging coordination, and subscriber handling. Mobile core network vendors use it to implement SGSN, GGSN, HLR, MSC/VLR interworking, and signalling procedures.
Test and quality teams use it to check attach, detach, paging, authentication, context activation, and recovery behavior. Buyers and integrators use it to confirm that equipment supports the required GPRS service model and interworking with external packet data networks.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005?
The standard relies on GSM02.60 for stage 1 service definitions, GSM03.64 for the radio interface overview, GSM04.60 for RLC/MAC, GSM04.64 for LLC, GSM04.65 for SNDCP, GSM08.16 and GSM08.18 for the Gb interface and BSSGP, GSM09.02 for MAP, GSM09.60 for GTP, GSM09.61 for interworking with packet data networks, GSM11.11 for the SIM-ME interface, and GSM03.20 for security-related network functions. It also uses RFCs for IP, UDP, TCP, and DNS, and CCITT recommendations for numbering and packet-network interworking.
What does the SIST EN 301 344 V6.7.1:2005 document contain?
The document includes functional models, logical architecture diagrams, and signalling-plane descriptions for the GPRS core network. It gives state models for mobility management, procedures for attach, detach, purge, authentication, identity check, routeing area update, PDP context management, and paging coordination.
It also contains transmission-plane descriptions for GTP, LLC, SNDCP, BSSGP, NS, and RLC/MAC, plus information-storage models for HLR, SGSN, GGSN, MS, and MSC/VLR. Annex B adds routeing examples, while Annex A gives APN and GGSN selection rules used when choosing the packet data path.
