Prevailing torque type all-metal hexagon high nuts - Property classes 5, 8, 10 and 12 (ISO 7042:2012)

This International Standard specifies the characteristics of prevailing torque type all-metal hexagon high nuts, with threads from M5 up to and including M36, in product grade A for threads up to and including M16 and product grade B for threads above M16, and with property classes 5, 8, 10 and 12. If other specifications are required, they can be selected from existing International Standards, for example ISO 261, ISO 724, ISO 898-2, ISO 965-2, ISO 2320 and ISO 4759-1.

Diese Internationale Norm legt die Eigenschaften von Sechskantmuttern mit Klemmteil (Ganzmetallmuttern), Typ 2, mit Gewinde M5 bis M36, in Produktklasse A für Gewinde bis M16 und Produktklasse B für Gewinde über M16 und mit Festigkeitsklassen 5, 8, 10 und 12 fest.
ANMERKUNG 1   Die Maße der Muttern entsprechen den in ISO 4033 angegebenen Maßen, mit Ausnahme der Maße mw und hmax.
ANMERKUNG 2   Muttern mit Festigkeitsklasse 9 werden in ISO 7720 behandelt.
Werden andere Festlegungen benötigt, können diese den bestehenden Internationalen Normen entnommen werden, z. B. ISO 261, ISO 724, ISO 898 2, ISO 965 2, ISO 2320 und ISO 4759 1.

WARNING — Nuts conforming to the requirements of this document are tested at the ambient
temperature range of 10 °C to 35 °C and are used in applications ranging from –50 °C to +150 °C;
however, these nuts are also used outside this range and up to +300 °C for specific applications.
It is possible that they do not retain the specified mechanical and physical properties at lower
and/or elevated temperatures. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the user to determine the
appropriate choices based on the service environment conditions of the assembly (see also 7.1).

For nuts designed for particular applications, see ISO/TR 16224.
This document does not specify requirements for functional properties such as:

EN ISO 3506-2:2020

This document specifies the mechanical and physical properties of nuts, with coarse pitch thread and
fine pitch thread, made of corrosion-resistant stainless steels, when tested at the ambient temperature
range of 10 °C to 35 °C. It specifies property classes in relation to austenitic, martensitic, ferritic and
duplex (austenitic-ferritic) steel grades for nuts.
ISO 3506-6 provides general rules and additional technical information on suitable stainless steels and
their properties.
Nuts conforming to the requirements of this document are evaluated at the ambient temperature
specified in paragraph 1. It is possible that they do not retain the specified mechanical and physical
properties at elevated and/or lower temperatures.
NOTE 1 Fasteners conforming to the requirements of this document are used without restriction in
applications ranging from –20 °C to +150 °C; however, fasteners conforming to this document are also used for
applications outside this range down to –196 °C and up to +300 °C. For more details, see ISO 3506-6.
Outside the temperature range of –20 °C to +150 °C, it is the responsibility of the user to determine the
appropriate choice for a given application, in consultation with an experienced fastener metallurgist
and by taking into account e.g. stainless steel composition, duration of exposure at elevated or low
temperature, the effect of the temperature on the fastener mechanical properties and clamped parts,
and the corrosive service environment of the bolted joint.
NOTE 2 ISO 3506-53) is developed in order to assist in the selection of appropriate stainless steel grades and
property classes intended for use at temperatures up to +800 °C.
This document applies to nuts:
— with ISO metric thread in accordance with ISO 68-1,
— with diameter/pitch combinations in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262,
— with coarse pitch thread M5 to M39, and fine pitch thread M8×1 to M39×3,
— with thread tolerances in accordance with ISO 965-1 and ISO 965-2,
— with specified property classes, including proof load,
— with different nut styles: thin nuts, regular nuts and high nuts,
— with a minimum nut height m ≥ 0,45D,
— with a minimum outside diameter or width across flats s ≥ 1,45D (see Annex A),
— of any shape, and

Stainless steel grades and property classes can be used for sizes outside the diameter limits of this
document (i.e. for D < 5 mm or D > 39 mm), provided that all applicable chemical, mechanical and

— weldability.

This International Standard specifies the functional properties for prevailing torque steel nuts when
tested at an ambient temperature range of +10 °C to +35 °C. It includes a combined test method to
determine the prevailing torque properties and the torque/clamp force properties at the same time.
It applies to prevailing torque all metal type nuts and prevailing torque non-metallic insert type nuts:
— with triangular ISO thread in accordance with ISO 68-1;
— with diameter/pitch combination in accordance with ISO 261 and ISO 262;
— with coarse pitch thread M5 to M39 or with fine pitch thread M8 × 1 to M39 × 3;
— with thread tolerances in accordance with ISO 965-2;
— with mechanical properties in accordance with ISO 898-2;
Prevailing torque values specified in this standard are based on laboratory test conditions.
NOTE 1 Actual prevailing torques in practical application can vary.
NOTE 2 All metal type nuts conforming to the requirements of this International Standard are used in
applications ranging from −50 °C to +150 °C.
NOTE 3 Non-metallic insert type nuts conforming to the requirements of this International Standard are used
in applications ranging from −50 °C to +120 °C.

Bolt and nut assemblies to this document have been designed to allow preloading of at least 0,7 fub x As 1) according to EN 1993-1-1 (Eurocode 3) and to obtain ductility predominantly by plastic elongation of the bolt. For this purpose the components have the following characteristics:
-  nut height according to style 1 (see EN ISO 4032);
-  thread length of the bolt according to ISO 888.
Bolt and nut assemblies to this document include washers according to EN 14399-6 or to EN 14399-5 (under the nut only).
NOTE   Attention is drawn to the importance of ensuring that the bolts are correctly used if satisfactory results are to be obtained. For recommendations concerning proper application, reference to EN 1090-2 is made.
The requirements for suitability for preloading are specified in EN 14399-2.
Clamp lengths and grip lengths for the bolt/nut/washer assemblies are given in the normative Annex A.
