SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 is the Slovenian adoption of ETSI EN 301 068-5 for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) DSS2 protocol testing on the network side. It specifies the Test Suite Structure and Test Purposes (TSS&TP) for ATM transfer capability and traffic parameter indication at the TB reference point, including the coincident SB/TB case, so conformance tests can be built for network implementations.
What does SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 specify?
SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 defines the network test structure and the test purposes for implementations that conform to EN 301 068-1. It is a testing specification, not the protocol specification itself, and it is aimed at the network side of the B-ISDN user-network interface.
Clause 1 limits the scope to the TB reference point or coincident SB and TB reference point. Clause 4 gives the TSS, clause 5 gives the TPs, clause 6 states compliance rules for an Abstract Test Suite (ATS), and clause 7 sets a minimum for comprehensive testing services. Annex A is a bibliography.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003?
The main content of SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 is the set of test purposes that a network implementation should satisfy at the signalling level. The document focuses on observable message exchanges, call states, and error handling.
The test suite is organized into two signalling directions
Clause 4 splits the TSS into procedures at the originating interface and at the destination interface. In practice, this means the standard checks both directions of a call: how the network reacts when it receives a SETUP message, and how it behaves when it has to send SETUP for an incoming call.
Each TP has a defined naming rule
Clause 5.1.1 gives the TP identifier pattern <suite_id>_<group>_<nnn>, with INDN used for the network test suite. This makes test cases traceable to a group and a numbered purpose, which matters when building, selecting, or deselecting tests from a PICS proforma.
The TP strategy is based on external behaviour
Clause 5.1.3 says the TPs come from analysis of EN 301 068-1 and EN 301 068-2, and they target externally visible behaviour. That means the tests are written around messages and call outcomes, not internal implementation details.
Call-state checking is part of many TPs
Clause 5.1.4 ties several TPs to a final call state such as N3, N6, N7, N9 or N10. In practice, the implementation under test (IUT) must show the expected state using the STATUS ENQUIRY and STATUS exchange described in EN 300 443-1.
The core test groups cover the main traffic parameter cases
Clause 5.2 covers Sustainable Cell Rate parameter set, tagging support, Broadband Bearer Capability, Available Bit Rate (ABR), ATM Block Transfer (ABT), SBR ATM transfer capability, and error conditions. For a reader, this means the standard checks both normal call setup and the handling of unsupported or invalid parameter combinations.
Error handling is explicit
Clause 5.2.1.1.7 and clause 5.2.1.2.7 require specific reactions to invalid or unsupported information elements, including RELEASE COMPLETE or STATUS responses with defined causes. In practice, the network must reject bad signalling in a predictable way, which is important for interoperability and troubleshooting.
Conformance is tied to the ATS and PICS
Clause 6 requires a compliant ATS to match the TP set or an allowed subset, use the same naming conventions, preserve the TP-to-PICS relationship, and comply with ISO/IEC 9646-2. That is the basis for consistent test case design and test case deselection.
Remote testing is the minimum for comprehensive service
Clause 7 says any organization claiming a comprehensive testing service for network equipment conforming to EN 301 068-1 shall use the Remote test method at minimum. This matters for labs because it sets the expected test approach for service claims.
What terms does SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 define?
- Abstract Test Suite (ATS) - The structured set of abstract test cases derived from the TPs for conformance testing.
- Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) - The statement that lists which protocol features an implementation supports, used to select test cases.
- Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing (PIXIT) - Implementation-specific test information needed to run or parameterize tests.
- Implementation Under Test (IUT) - The network implementation being checked for conformance.
- Test Purpose (TP) - A statement of one expected behaviour that a test case should verify.
- Test Suite Structure (TSS) - The grouping of TPs into the structure used to organize test cases.
- TB reference point - The broadband T reference point on the user-network interface used in the scope.
- SB reference point - The broadband S reference point used where SB and TB coincide.
Who uses SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003?
SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 is used by conformance test laboratories, protocol implementers, and network equipment vendors working on B-ISDN DSS2 signalling. Quality and test engineers use it to derive ATS test cases, map them to PICS entries, and check call handling and error responses. Buyers and evaluators use it to understand what kind of network-side testing a claimed conformance package should cover.
What changed in SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 from the previous edition?
The document history lists V1.1.2 as a prior publication and V1.2.1 as the publication used for this edition. The history also records the 2002 approval and publication trail for V1.2.1.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003?
- EN 301 068-1 - Provides the protocol specification that the test purposes are based on.
- EN 301 068-2 - Provides the PICS proforma used to relate test purposes to implementation features.
- EN 300 443-1 - Gives the B-ISDN user-network interface layer 3 procedures used for call states and signalling behaviour.
- ISO/IEC 9646-1 - Supplies the conformance testing terminology and framework for ATS, IUT, PICS, PIXIT and TP.
- ISO/IEC 9646-2 - Provides the rules for Abstract Test Suite specification and ATS compliance.

What does the SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003 document contain?
Clause 4 gives the TSS, and clause 5 gives the TPs grouped by originating and destination interface procedures. The TP set covers setup, acceptance, refusal, parameter negotiation, and error cases for the named ATM traffic parameter families. Clause 5.1.1 includes the TP naming convention table, which is used to identify each test case unambiguously. Annex A contains bibliography references used to support the testing methodology.

(14) 5 Test Purposes (TP) 5.1 Introduction For each test requirement a TP is defined. 5.1.1 TP naming convention TPs are numbered, starting at 01, within each group. Groups are organized according to the TSS. Additional references are added to identify the actual test suite (see table 1). Table 1: TP identifier naming convention scheme Identifier: __
= service + type of IUT: "INDN" for connection INDication, IUT = Network
= group number:

sequential number:
(01-99)
5.1.2 Source of TP definition The TPs are based on EN 301 068-1 [1]. 5.1.3 Test strategy As the base standard EN 301 068-1 [1] contains no explicit requirements for testing, the TPs were generated as a result of an analysis of the base standard and the PICS specification EN 301 068-2 [2]. The TPs are only based on conformance requirements related to the externally observable behaviour of the IUT, and are limited to conceivable situations to which a real implementation is likely to be faced (see ETS 300 406 in bibliography). 5.1.4 Test of call states Many TPs include a reference to the IUT's final call state after the realization of the TP. In these cases the TP includes the requirement to ensure that the IUT has entered this particular final call state. Ensuring that the IUT is in a particular call state shall be realized by following the procedures described in clause 5.6.11 of EN 300 443-1 [6]. According to these procedures, the IUT on receipt of a STATUS ENQUIRY message, shall respond with a STATUS message indicating, in the fifth octet of the Call state information element, the current call state of the IUT. This exchange of messages is not mentioned explicitly in each TP but is considered to be implicit in the reference to the final call state. This way of phrasing the TPs has been used to avoid over-complicating the text and structure of the TPs and to improve the readability. SIST EN 301 068-5 V1.2.1:2003
