Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 15702 was prepared by the Fastness Tests
Commission of the International Union of Leather Technologists and
Chemists Societies (IUF Commission, IULTCS). It is based on IUF 435
published in J. Soc. Leather Tech. Chem., 76, pp. 180-182 (1992), and
declared an official method of the IULTCS in October 1993.
Annexes A and B of this International Standard are for information only.

ISO ISO 15702:1998(E)
Introduction
In some countries, it has become customary to wash items containing
leather components, such as sport shoes, rucksacks etc., in washing
machines. Also labels on clothing that are washed in machines are
sometimes made of leather. In order to assess leathers designed to be
used for such items, a machine washing test method has been developed.
This International Standard assesses the colour fastness of such leathers
under relatively severe conditions, using an alkaline detergent, which has
been developed for textiles. It is not intended to replace ISO 15703,
Leather — Tests for colour fastness — Colour fastness to mild washing,
which assesses the colour fastness of leather to mild hand washing.
The detergent specified in this International Standard contains a high
percentage of phosphate, which may affect some leather dyes
unfavourably and which is, for environmental reasons, reduced or even
banned from use in commercial textile detergents in many countries. But
no other internationally agreed detergent is available and it fulfils the
purpose of the test, which is to measure the colour fastness of leather to a
process that is characteristic for textiles. As soon as such an alternative
detergent is agreed on internationally, a revision of this method will be
considered.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO ISO 15702:1998(E)
Leather — Tests for colour fastness — Colour fastness
to machine washing
1 Scope
This International Standard specifies a method for determining the resistance of leather to
washing in a washing machine under specified conditions.
The method is suitable for assessing the change in colour of the leather, the staining of an
adjacent textile fabric and any change in the finish of the leather.
This method can also be used in leather preparation for assessing the change in any other
physical or chemical property during machine washing.
2 Normative references
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute
provisions of this International Standard. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were
valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this
International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent
editions of the standard indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of
currently valid International Standards.
