General Information

Abstract

This specification defines the stage-2 service description for a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) on GSM. In analogy with CCITT Recommendations I.130 [1] and with reference to CCITT Recommendations VI.1 Q.65 (Stage 2 of the method for the characterisation of services supported by an ISDN), the second stage of the following three-level structure is derived from a stage 1 service description. Stage 1 is an overall service description, from the service subscriber s and user s standpoints, that views the network as a single entity which provides services to the user.  Stage 2 identifies the functional capabilities and information flows needed to support the service described in stage 1. Furthermore, it identifies various possible physical locations for the functional capabilities. The output of Stage 2, which is signalling system independent, is used as an input to Stage 3, the design of signalling system and switching Recommendations.  Stage 3 defines the signalling system protocols and switching functions needed to implement the service described in stage 2.

Overview

SIST EN 301 344 V6.4.1:2005 is a Slovenian adoption of the European standard EN 301 344, published by SIST (Slovenian Institute for Standardization). The standard specifies the stage 2 service description for General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) within the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) Phase 2+ framework. In line with CCITT (now ITU-T) Recommendations, stage 2 defines the functional capabilities and information flows required to provide GPRS services to end users and subscribers. This stage bridges the high-level service description (stage 1) and the detailed protocol and signaling design (stage 3), supporting the implementation of efficient and interoperable digital cellular mobile networks.

Key Topics

  • GPRS Functional Architecture: Defines the logical network components necessary to support packet-based data services over GSM networks.
  • Information Flows: Outlines the necessary information flows between different network entities, such as GPRS Support Nodes, mobile stations, and network management systems.
  • Service Access and Mobility Management: Describes registration, authentication, authorization, and session management for seamless mobile data connectivity.
  • Charging and Quality of Service (QoS): Specifies requirements for data charging, session management, and QoS profiles to enable fair billing and reliable service delivery.
  • Interworking and Interfaces: Details reference points and interfaces for GPRS interoperation with external packet-switched networks (e.g., Internet and PSPDN).
  • Network and Radio Resource Management: Describes techniques for the efficient allocation of radio and network resources necessary for GPRS service support.

Applications

SIST EN 301 344 V6.4.1:2005 plays a crucial role in the development and deployment of mobile data services within GSM networks. Its main practical applications include:

  • Mobile Internet Access: Enabling users to access the web, email, and multimedia applications on mobile devices using GPRS.
  • IoT and M2M Solutions: Supporting data connectivity for machine-to-machine (M2M) and Internet of Things (IoT) applications via GSM networks.
  • Roaming Services: Facilitating seamless packet-switched data roaming across different geographic regions and network providers.
  • Integration with Fixed and IP Networks: Providing specifications for interoperability between GSM/GPRS networks and external packet data networks, enhancing global mobile connectivity.
  • Mobile Value-Added Services (VAS): Serving as the technical basis for developing SMS, MMS, and advanced mobile application services.

Related Standards

  • GSM 03.60 (Stage 1): Defines the overall GPRS service description from a user perspective.
  • GSM 03.64: Offers a global overview of the radio interface for GPRS.
  • GSM 03.61 & GSM 03.62: Address stage 2 service descriptions for point-to-multipoint and group call services in GPRS.
  • EN 301 344 Series: Encompasses updates and enhancements for various GPRS features.
  • ITU-T I.130 & Q.65: Establish methodologies for the characterization and development of telecommunication services.

By adhering to SIST EN 301 344 V6.4.1:2005, organizations can ensure interoperability, robust network performance, and support for advanced mobile data services within the GSM ecosystem. The standard is foundational for telecom engineers, mobile network operators, equipment vendors, and service providers developing GPRS-based digital cellular telecommunications infrastructure.
