SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 is the SIST adoption of an ETSI standard for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). It defines a Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) proforma for the Service Specific Connection Oriented Protocol (SSCOP) in the Signalling ATM Adaptation Layer (SAAL). In practice, it tells a supplier how to record which SSCOP capabilities, PDUs and parameters an implementation supports when claiming conformance to ETS 300 436-1.
What does SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 specify?
SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 specifies the PICS proforma for SSCOP. It is a reporting document for conformance assessment, not the protocol specification itself, so it is used to describe an implementation against ETS 300 436-1 and the PICS rules in ISO/IEC 9646-7.
The standard is organized into four clauses and one normative annex:
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | The full PICS proforma for ETS 300 436-1, including instructions, identification fields, conformance statement, SSCOP capabilities, PDUs and system parameters |
Clause 1 states the scope, clause 2 lists normative references, clause 3 gives definitions and abbreviations, and clause 4 states the conformance rules for a valid PICS.
What are the key requirements of SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999?
SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 requires a supplier to complete the annex A questionnaire when claiming conformance to ETS 300 436-1. That matters because the document is the formal record of what the implementation actually supports, which is what evaluators compare during conformance testing.
Completing the PICS correctly
Annex A.1 says the PICS is a standardized questionnaire and explains the item, status, reference, support and values-supported columns. The supplier must mark each item explicitly using the defined codes such as mandatory, optional, not applicable, or conditional. In practice, this avoids vague declarations and makes different implementations easier to compare.
Identifying the implementation
Annex A.2 requires identification of the implementation under test (IUT), the system under test (SUT), the supplier, the client and a contact person. It also asks for version and configuration details. This matters because a PICS must be tied to a specific product build or configuration, not just to a product family name.
Declaring overall conformance
Annex A.4 asks a direct yes/no question on whether the implementation meets all mandatory requirements of the referenced standard. If the answer is no, the PICS must identify the missing mandatory capabilities and explain the non-conformance. That makes the statement usable in audits or supplier reviews because the acceptance decision is explicit.
Describing SSCOP protocol capabilities
Annex A.5.1 covers the SSCOP Protocol Capabilities. It includes items such as Keep Alive, Local Data Retrieve, error recovery, establishment and release procedures, polling, STAT PDU segmentation, layer-management error reporting, protocol error detection and SSCOP User-to-User Information. For a buyer or tester, this section shows which SSCOP functions are available and which service combinations are realistic.
Declaring PDU and parameter support
Annex A.5.2 and A.5.3 cover SSCOP PDUs and system parameters. The PDU section focuses on format rules such as octet order, bit numbering, 32-bit alignment and zero coding of reserved bits. The parameter section covers items such as MaxCC, MaxPD, MaxSTAT, SSCOP SDU size and timers including Timer_POLL, Timer_KEEP-ALIVE, Timer_NO-RESPONSE, Timer_IDLE and Timer_CC. In practice, these entries show the operational limits and timing behavior that must be documented for testing and interoperability.
Handling multiple configurations
Annex A.1 allows one PICS to cover more than one configuration, or several PICS forms if that is clearer. It also provides a way to express profile-dependent answers using conditional expressions tied to the System Conformance Statement (SCS). That is useful when one product supports several deployment profiles and not every feature applies to every profile.
What terms does SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 define?
- Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) - A supplier statement describing which capabilities of an implementation or system are supported.
- Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement (PICS) - An ICS for an implementation claimed to conform to a particular protocol specification.
- PICS proforma - A questionnaire form that becomes a PICS once the supplier completes it.
- Implementation Under Test (IUT) - The specific implementation whose conformance is being described.
- System Under Test (SUT) - The wider system that contains the IUT during assessment.
- Protocol Data Unit (PDU) - A protocol message unit, used here for SSCOP message support and format items.
- Signalling ATM Adaptation Layer (SAAL) - The adaptation layer in which SSCOP operates for B-ISDN signalling.
Who uses SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999?
SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 is used by protocol suppliers, telecom equipment vendors, test laboratories and conformance assessors. Suppliers use it to state exactly which SSCOP features, PDUs and parameters their implementation supports. Test teams and evaluators use it to compare an implementation against ETS 300 436-1 and to prepare conformance or interoperability checking. It is also useful for buyers or integrators who need to know whether a product supports the SSCOP functions required by a given B-ISDN signalling profile.
Which standards are used with SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999?
SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 relies on ETS 300 436-1, which specifies the SSCOP protocol that the PICS describes. It also uses ISO/IEC 9646-1 for conformance testing concepts and ISO/IEC 9646-7 for the rules and notation used in Implementation Conformance Statements and PICS proformas.
What does the SIST ETS 300 436-2:1999 document contain?
The document contains a guided PICS form with structured tables for supplier completion. Annex A includes identification fields for the implementation, supplier and contact details, a global conformance declaration, and detailed SSCOP tables for protocol capabilities, PDU format support and system parameters. The tables use standardized status markings and support/value entries so that completed forms can be read consistently across suppliers and test organizations. It also includes instructions for profile-dependent answers and comments, which helps document more than one configuration in a controlled way.

intended purposes and may further publish the completed PICS.
A.1 Guidance for completing the PICS proforma
A.1.1 Purposes and structure
The purpose of this PICS proforma is to provide a mechanism whereby a supplier of an implementation of
the requirements defined in ETS 300 436-1 [1] may provide information about the implementation in a
standardized manner.
The PICS proforma is subdivided into subclauses for the following categories of information:
- guidance for completing the PICS proforma;
- identification of the implementation;
- identification of the protocol;
- global statement of conformance;
- SSCOP;
- protocol capabilities;
- protocol data units;
- system parameters.
A.1.2 Abbreviations and conventions
The PICS proforma contained in this annex is comprised of information in tabular form in accordance with
the guidelines presented in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [3].
Item column
The item column contains a number which identifies the item in the table.
Item description column
The item description column describes in free text each respective item (e.g. parameters, timers, etc.). It
implicitly means "is supported by the implementation?".
Status column
The following notations, defined in ISO/IEC 9646-7 [3], are used for the status column:
M mandatory - the capability is required to be supported.
O optional - the capability may be supported or not.
N/A not applicable - in the given context, it is impossible to use the capability.
O.i qualified optional - for mutually exclusive or selectable options from a set. "i" is
an integer which identifies an unique group of related optional items and the
logic of their selection which is defined immediately following the table.
ci conditional - the requirement on the capability ("m", "o", "x" or "n/a") depends on
the support of other optional or conditional items. "i" is an integer identifying an
unique conditional status expression which is defined immediately following the
table.
