SIST ISO 6670:2026
(Main)Instant coffee — Sampling method for bulk units with liners (ISO 6670:2025)
- Abstract
1.1 This document specifies a sampling method for a consignment of instant coffee, shipped in 10 package units or more.
This document is applicable to cases which have inner linings of moisture-resistant material hermetically sealed because of the hygroscopic nature of instant coffee and which are in package units greater than 10 kg net mass, typically up to 50 kg. This document is also applicable to units of more than 50 kg, usually called “big bags” or “supersacks”. The cases are generally made of cardboard of appropriate strength and the big bags are made of suitable plastic material.
1.2 This document is also applicable to the selection and preparation of a sufficiently representative sample of the consignment, which is intended:
a) to serve as a basis for an offer for sale;
b) for examination to verify that the instant coffee to be offered for sale satisfies the producer’s sales specification;
c) for examination to determine one or more of the characteristics of the instant coffee for technical, commercial, administrative and arbitration purposes;
d) for retention as a reference sample for use, if required, in litigation.
1.3 This document is applicable to all types of instant coffee, as defined in ISO 3509, contained in all types of units with liners, with the exception stated in 1.4.
1.4 For bulk density and particle size, this document is applicable to spray-dried powder and freeze-dried instant coffees only, as defined in ISO 3509, due to the intrinsic fragility of particles of agglomerated instant coffee, which leads to greater breakdown and headspace in the final packed units for the consumer.

SIST ISO 6670:2026 is the Slovenian standard that adopts ISO 6670:2025 from ISO. It specifies how to sample consignments of instant coffee packed in bulk units with liners, so the sample can represent the lot for sale, technical checks, arbitration, or litigation. It is aimed at samplers, laboratories, buyers, sellers, and quality teams handling instant coffee in lined cases or big bags.
What does SIST ISO 6670:2026 specify?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 specifies a sampling method for consignments of instant coffee shipped in 10 package units or more. It covers lined bulk units such as cardboard cases with moisture-resistant inner liners and larger plastic bulk packs often called big bags or supersacks.
The standard is also written for preparing representative samples for commercial and legal purposes. In practice, that matters because the sample may be used to support an offer for sale, check a sales specification, assess product characteristics, or keep a reference sample for possible litigation.
SIST ISO 6670:2026 applies to all types of instant coffee as defined in ISO 3509, with a narrower application for bulk density and particle size. For those two characteristics, it applies only to spray-dried powder and freeze-dried instant coffees.
The document is organized into:
- Scope
- Normative references
- Terms and definitions
- Requirements
- Sampling equipment
- Procedure
- Packing and marking of samples
- Sampling report
- Precautions during storage and transport of samples
- Annex A with the scoop sampling method
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Scoop sampling method, including the scoop and how to take the increment |
What are the key requirements of SIST ISO 6670:2026?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 makes the sampler, the sampling conditions, the equipment, and the sample handling process part of the method. The practical goal is to protect the coffee from contamination, moisture change, and unnecessary breakage while still obtaining a sample that reflects the lot.
Sampling personnel and conditions
Sampling shall be done by experienced samplers, trained samplers, or specialized sampling organizations. Sampling shall take place on apparently sound units and liners, in a sheltered place, with protection against contamination.
The standard also calls for minimal moisture change during sampling, preferably in controlled air conditions. That matters because instant coffee is hygroscopic, so moisture gain can affect quality checks and dry matter-related decisions.
If any package unit or liner is damaged, the sampler shall report it and exclude increments taken from damaged units from the bulk sample. If damaged units are present, the sampler shall check the lot for damage.
Sampling equipment
SIST ISO 6670:2026 requires a scoop that complies with Annex A, plus clean, dry sample containers and packages. These containers need materials that do not change odour, taste, or composition, and they must resist transport hazards and moisture absorption.
Taking increments
The number of package units to sample is agreed in advance between the parties. Units are selected using random numbers, then opened and sampled through the liner seal according to the procedure and Annex A.
The increment is taken with the scoop, and more than one increment per unit may be needed to build a bulk sample. In practice, this means the sampler may need to distribute sampling across the lot instead of relying on a single grab.
Preparing samples
SIST ISO 6670:2026 allows two sample-preparation routes:
- combine increments into a bulk sample, then make a blended bulk sample and laboratory sample
- keep increments separate and pack each one as a laboratory sample
The first route is for a general representative sample. The second route helps a laboratory compare differences between individual units in the lot.
Packing, marking, report, and transport
Samples shall be packed in moisture-proof and oxygen-proof containers with airtight closures. The container or label shall show the sampling date, product type, sampler identification, shipping or contract reference, transport vehicle, location, lot details, sampled unit count, and sample mass.
The sampling report shall record the method, damaged units, the condition of the lot, and nearby conditions that could contaminate or affect moisture absorption. Laboratory samples should be sent for examination as soon as possible, and the report should travel with them.
What terms does SIST ISO 6670:2026 define?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 defines several core sampling terms used throughout the procedure.
- Consignment - the quantity of instant coffee dispatched or received at one time under one contract or shipping document.
- Lot - a homogeneous quantity produced in the same cycle and identified by a specific code.
- Sample - the part selected from a lot to estimate the lot's properties by examination.
- Increment - a portion of instant coffee taken from a single unit of a lot.
- Bulk sample - the combined collection of increments taken from the lot.
- Blended bulk sample - the bulk sample after the increments have been combined and mixed.
- Laboratory sample - a portion taken from the blended bulk sample for examination without changing its composition.
Who uses SIST ISO 6670:2026?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 is used by coffee manufacturers, exporters, importers, buyers, sellers, laboratories, inspectors, and specialized sampling organizations. It supports quality control, product verification, contract checking, technical evaluation, and dispute handling for instant coffee in bulk units with liners.
It is especially relevant where the sample may later serve as evidence in commercial or legal questions.
What changed in SIST ISO 6670:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 replaces SIST ISO 6670:2003 and adopts ISO 6670:2025 as a third edition.
The foreword states these changes:
- the terms and definitions were updated
- the marking content was updated
- the procedure in Annex A was updated
Which standards are used with SIST ISO 6670:2026?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 cites ISO 3509, Coffee and coffee products - Vocabulary. ISO 3509 supplies the vocabulary used for instant coffee and the product types named in the scope, including the types relevant to bulk density and particle size.
What does the SIST ISO 6670:2026 document contain?
SIST ISO 6670:2026 contains a complete sampling workflow for lined bulk units of instant coffee. It covers how to select units at random, take increments, combine or keep them separate, and prepare laboratory samples for examination.
It also contains the packing and marking rules, the sampling report content, and storage and transport precautions. Annex A gives the scoop sampling method, including the scoop, how to open the unit, and how to collect a representative increment.
