Overview

SIST EN 60371-3-9:1998 is a European standard specifying the requirements for insulating materials based on mica, specifically focusing on moulding micanite. Moulding micanite comprises mica splittings or mica paper, with or without reinforcement, bonded by suitable binders and supplied as sheets or rolls. This standard applies to materials with nominal thicknesses ranging from 0.10 mm to 7 mm. It ensures consistent quality and performance of mica-based insulating materials used widely in electrical and electronic applications.

Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and adopted by the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) as a CLC standard, SIST EN 60371-3-9:1998 provides a detailed framework for manufacturers and users to classify, test, and select moulding micanite materials suitable for insulating purposes in electrical engineering.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition
Moulding micanite consists of mica splittings or mica paper bonded with resins such as shellac, alkyd, epoxy, or silicone. The mica may be reinforced with glass fabric or polyester film, enhancing mechanical strength and electrical insulation.

  • Thickness and Dimensions
The standard covers mica insulation materials from 0.10 mm to 7 mm thickness. Strict tolerances are specified to ensure material uniformity in rolls or sheets, including permissible deviations in width, length, and thickness.

  • Thermal and Electrical Performance
Requirements include thermal endurance according to IEC 216-1 methods, and minimum electrical strength values (kV/mm) are defined per material type, assuring reliable insulation under operational stresses.

  • Designation and Classification
Materials are classified into types (e.g., MS1 to MS7 for mica splittings and MP1 to MP5 for mica paper variants) based on raw material, binder type, reinforcement, mica content, and thickness.

  • Quality and Packaging
The standard mandates uniform surface quality free from defects and specifies packaging practices for protection during transportation and storage. Proper labeling with manufacturing details, material description, batch numbers, and shelf-life information is required.

  • Normative References
Relevant IEC and ISO standards for testing methods, mica grading, and related materials are incorporated, enabling comprehensive assessment and cross-referencing.

Applications

Moulding micanite insulating materials compliant with SIST EN 60371-3-9:1998 find essential applications across electrical engineering sectors:

  • Electrical Insulation for High-Temperature Equipment
Due to excellent thermal endurance, these mica-based materials are suited for insulation in transformers, motors, generators, and high-voltage apparatus where stable dielectric properties at elevated temperatures are critical.

  • Electrical Component Manufacturing
Used as sheets or rolls in the fabrication of capacitors, insulators, and insulating barriers in electronic devices.

  • Mechanical and Thermal Reinforcement
The inclusion of glass fabric or polyester film reinforcement provides mechanical robustness and dimensional stability, ideal for electrical assemblies subjected to mechanical stress and thermal cycling.

  • Custom Moulding Processes
The mouldable nature of these micanite materials enables shaping under heat, supporting specialized component designs demanding precise insulation profiles.

The standard supports manufacturers and engineers in selecting suitable micanite types that meet specific electrical, thermal, and mechanical requirements, ensuring safety, durability, and performance in end-use applications.

Related Standards

SIST EN 60371-3-9:1998 is part of a comprehensive series on mica-based insulating materials and is directly linked to the following relevant standards:
