This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for earth electrode inspection
housings (earth housings) installed in the earth and for earth electrode seals.
Lightning protection system components (LPSC) can also be suitable for use in hazardous
atmospheres. For this reason, there are additional requirements when installing the components
under such conditions.
NOTE Different requirements and test procedures are given in the EN 124 series [2] and the EN 1253 series [3].

IEC 62561-4:2023 is available as which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition. IEC 62561-4:2023 deals with the requirements and tests for metallic and non-metallic conductor fasteners that are used to retain and support the air-termination, down-conductor and earth-termination systems. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2017. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) alignment with the latest edition of ISO IEC 60068-2-52:2017 relating to salt mist atmosphere treatment;
b) alignment with the new edition of ISO 22479:2019 relating to humid sulphurous atmosphere treatment;
c) new normative annex for the applicability of previous tests.

LIGHTNING PROTECTION SYSTEM COMPONENTS (LPSC) –
Part 3: Requirements for isolating spark gaps (ISGs)
1 Scope
This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for isolating spark gaps (ISGs) for
lightning protection systems.
ISGs can be used to indirectly bond a lightning protection system to other nearby metalwork
where a direct bond is not permissible for functional reasons.
Typical applications include the connection to
• earth-termination systems of power installations,
• earth-termination systems of telecommunication systems,
• auxiliary earth electrodes of voltage-operated, earth fault circuit breakers,
• rail earth electrodes of power and DC railways,
• measuring earth electrodes for laboratories,
• installations with cathodic protection and stray current systems,
• service entry masts for low-voltage overhead cables,
• bypassing insulated flanges and insulated couplings of pipelines.
Applications where follow currents occur are not included.
Extra requirements for the components can be necessary for LSCs intended for use in
hazardous atmospheres.
NOTE 1 In CENELEC member countries, testing requirements of components for explosive atmospheres are
specified in CLC/TS 50703-2.
NOTE 2 Testing of components for an explosive atmosphere (as defined in the IEC 60079-10 series) is not covered
by this document.

This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for devices intended to count the number of lightning strikes based on the current flowing in a conductor. This conductor may be part of a lightning protection system (LPS) or connected to an SPD installation or other conductors, which are not intended to conduct a significant portion of lightning currents.
LSCs for use in hazardous atmospheres, extra requirements for the components may be necessary to be taken.
NOTE In CENELEC countries, testing requirements of components for explosive atmosphere are specified in CLC/TS 50703-2.

This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for metallic connection
components that form part of a lightning protection system (LPS). Typically, these can be
connectors, clamps, bonding and bridging components, expansion pieces and test joints.
For the purposes of this document the following connection types are considered as
connection components: exothermic, brazing, welding, clamping, crimping, seaming, screwing
or bolting.
Testing of components for an explosive atmosphere is not covered by this document.

This document defines the requirements and testing for joints of metal sheets, with or without insulating coatings, used as natural components in roofs, facades or walls of buildings, suitable to conduct lightning current in LPS where the interconnection of these metal sheets does not ensure durable electrical connection.
NOTE This document does not deal with the lightning interception capabilities of these components. The connection clamps for connecting the metallic sheet with the down conductor to the earth termination system are LPSC, tested according to EN 62561 1.

This document describes the characteristics of thunderstorm warning systems (TWSs) in order
to implement lightning hazard preventive measures.
Single sensors and/or a network of sensors (e.g. lightning location system) can be used as a
TWS.
This document provides requirements for sensors and networks collecting accurate data of the
relevant parameters, giving real-time information on lightning and atmospheric electric activity.
It describes the application of the data collected by these sensors and networks in the form of
warnings and historical data.
This document includes:
• a general description of available techniques for TWSs;
• guidelines for alarming methods;
• informative examples of possible preventive actions.
The following aspects are outside the scope of this document:
a) lightning protection systems: such systems are covered by IEC 62305 (all parts) [1]1;
b) other thunderstorm related phenomena such as rain, hail, wind;
c) satellite and radar based thunderstorm detection techniques;
d) portable devices (a device where the sensor is not fixed).
NOTE It is possible that calibration and testing of portable devices will not be sufficient to provide efficient warning.
