to implement lightning hazard preventive measures.
Single sensors and/or a network of sensors (e.g. lightning location system) can be used as a
TWS.
This document provides requirements for sensors and networks collecting accurate data of the
relevant parameters, giving real-time information on lightning and atmospheric electric activity.
It describes the application of the data collected by these sensors and networks in the form of
warnings and historical data.
This document includes:
• a general description of available techniques for TWSs;
• guidelines for alarming methods;
• informative examples of possible preventive actions.
The following aspects are outside the scope of this document:
a) lightning protection systems: such systems are covered by IEC 62305 (all parts) [1]1;
b) other thunderstorm related phenomena such as rain, hail, wind;
c) satellite and radar based thunderstorm detection techniques;
d) portable devices (a device where the sensor is not fixed).

This document defines the requirements and testing for joints of metal sheets, with or without insulating coatings, used as natural components in roofs, facades or walls of buildings, suitable to conduct lightning current in LPS where the interconnection of these metal sheets does not ensure durable electrical connection.
NOTE This document does not deal with the lightning interception capabilities of these components. The connection clamps for connecting the metallic sheet with the down conductor to the earth termination system are LPSC, tested according to EN 62561 1.

This International Standard describes the characteristics of thunderstorm warning systems and evaluation of the usefulness of lightning real time data and/or storm electrification data in order to implement lightning hazard preventive measures.
This standard provides the basic requirements for sensors and networks collecting accurate data of the relevant parameters, giving real-time information of lightning tracks and range. It describes the application of the data collected by these sensors and networks in the form of warnings and historical data.
This standard applies to the use of information from thunderstorm warning systems (systems or equipment providing real-time information) on atmospheric electric activity in order to monitor preventive measures.
This standard includes:
• a general description of available lightning and storm electrification hazard warning systems;
• a classification of thunderstorm detection devices and properties;
• guidelines for alarming methods;
• a procedure to determine the usefulness of thunderstorm information;
• some informative examples of possible preventive actions.
The following aspects are outside the scope of this standard:
a) lightning protection systems; such systems are covered by the IEC 62305 series;
b) other thunderstorm related phenomena such as rain, hail, wind;
c) satellite and radar thunderstorm detection techniques.
A non-exhaustive list of situations to which this standard could be applicable is given below:
• people in open areas involved in activities such as maintenance, labour, sports, competitions, agriculture and fisheries or situations where large crowds gather;
• wind farms, large solar power systems, power lines;
• occupational health and safety prevention;
• sensitive equipment such as computer systems, emergency systems, alarms and safety equipment;
• operational and industrial processes;
• storage, processing and transportation of hazardous substances (e.g. flammable, radioactive, toxic and explosive substances);
• determined environments or activities with special danger of electrostatic discharges (e.g. space and flight vehicle operations);
• operations in which the continuity of the basic services is very important (e.g. telecommunications, the generation, transport and distribution of energy, sanitary services and emergency services);
• infrastructures: ports, airports, railroads, motorways and cableways;

This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for devices intended to count the
number of lightning strikes based on the current flowing in a conductor. This conductor may
be part of a lightning protection system (LPS) or connected to an SPD installation or other
conductors, which are not intended to conduct a significant portion of lightning currents.
LSCs may also be suitable for use in hazardous atmospheres and there are therefore extra
requirements necessary for the components to be installed in such conditions.

This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for earth electrode inspection
housings (earth housing) installed in the earth and for earth electrode seals.
Lightning protection system components (LPSC) can also be suitable for use in hazardous
atmospheres. There are therefore additional requirements when installing the components
under such conditions.
NOTE Different requirements and test procedures are given in EN 124 (all parts) and EN 1253 (all parts).

This part of IEC 62561 deals with the requirements and tests for metallic and non-metallic
conductor fasteners that are used to retain and support the air-termination, down-conductor
and earth-termination systems.
This document does not cover the fixing of conductor fasteners to the fabric of structures due
to the vast number and types used in modern day construction.
LPSC can also be suitable for use in hazardous atmospheres. There are therefore additional
requirements when installing the components in such conditions.

This part of IEC 62561 specifies the requirements and tests for isolating spark gaps (ISG) for
lightning protection systems.
ISGs can be used to indirectly bond a lightning protection system to other nearby metalwork
where a direct bond is not permissible for functional reasons.
Typical applications include the connection to
• earth-termination systems of power installations,
• earth-termination systems of telecommunication systems,
• auxiliary earth electrodes of voltage-operated, earth fault circuit breakers,
• rail earth electrode of power and DC railways,
• measuring earth electrodes for laboratories,
• installations with cathodic protection and stray current systems,
• service entry masts for low-voltage overhead cables,
• bypassing insulated flanges and insulated couplings of pipelines.
This does not cover applications where follow currents occur.
NOTE Lightning protection system components (LPSC) can also be suitable for use in hazardous conditions such
as fire and explosive atmosphere. Due regard will be taken of the extra requirements necessary for the
components to be installed in such conditions.

For the purposes of this document the following connection types are considered as
connection components: exothermic, brazing, welding, clamping, crimping, seaming, screwing
or bolting.
Testing of components for an explosive atmosphere is not covered by this document.

This international standard provides information for the design, installation, inspection, maintenance and testing of electrical and electronic system protection (ESP), and measures to reduce the risk of permanent failures due to lightning electromagnetic impulse (LEMP) within a structure. He does not cover protection against electromagnetic interference due to lightning, which may cause malfunctioning of electronic systems. However, the information reported in Annex A can also be used to evaluate such disturbances. This draft international standard does not deal with detailed design of the electrical and electronic systems themselves.

This European Standard specifies the minimum level of resistibility of equipment having telecommunication port(s) to overvoltages and overcurrents. This European Standard covers telecommunication equipment installed at customer premises as shown in Figure 1. Overvoltages or overcurrents covered by this European Standard are surges due to direct or indirect lightning on the telecommunication line plant. Overvoltages or overcurrent not covered by this European Standard are - short-term induction of alternating voltages from electric power systems (including electrified railway), - earth potential rise due to power faults or load switching, - direct contacts between telecommunication lines and low voltage power lines. This European Standard is intended for use by network (public/private) operators and the equipment manufacturers. This European Standard applies to equipment having telecommunication port(s) connected to external conductors, i.e. conductor located outside the customer's building. The tests are type tests and, although they are applicable to a complete system, it is recognised that they may be applied to individual items of equipment during development and design work.

This part of IEC 62305 provides information for the design, installation, inspection, maintenance and testing of a LEMP protection measures system (LPMS) for electrical and electronic systems within a structure, able to reduce the risk of permanent failures due to lightning electromagnetic impulse. This standard does not cover protection against electromagnetic interference due to lightning, which may cause malfunctioning of electronic systems. However, the information reported in Annex A can also be used to evaluate such disturbances. Protection measures against electromagnetic interference are covered in IEC 60364-4-44 and in the IEC 61000 series [1]2. This standard provides guidelines for cooperation between the designer of the electrical and electronic system, and the designer of the protection measures, in an attempt to achieve optimum protection effectiveness.
