IEC 60335-2-90:2024 deals with:
- the safety of microwave ovens with a cavity door intended for commercial use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances.
These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used for commercial processing of food, also in areas open to the public, for example in kitchens of restaurants, canteens, hospitals and in commercial enterprises such as bakeries and butcheries;
- the safety of combination microwave ovens with a cavity door, the requirements of which are contained in normative Annex AA;
- the safety of microwave ovens without a cavity door and with transportation means that are intended for commercial use only, for the heating of food and beverages, the requirements of which are contained in normative Annex BB.
Microwave ovens covered by normative Annex BB have transportation means for moving the load through the microwave oven. Requirements for tunnel microwave ovens and several types of microwave vending machines are covered.
This standard also deals with microwave ovens intended to be used on board ships, for which normative Annex EE is applicable.
In normative Annex BB, a microwave oven without a cavity door and with transportation means is described as a microwave oven. All clauses of this standard apply to these appliances unless otherwise specified in normative Annex BB.
This part of IEC 60335 also takes into account ordinary persons having access to the removing area of the vending machine.
The appliance can be built into a vending machine, in which case IEC 60335-2-75 can also be applicable.
Appliances that use non-electrical energy are within the scope of this standard.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types of appliances.
This standard does not take into account the use of a microwave oven without a cavity door and with transportation means by ordinary persons except in the vicinity of entrance and exit ports.
The rationales for particular microwave exposure conditions and measures related to microwave energy being confined by an open structure are given in normative Annex BB.
Attention is drawn to the fact that
- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on trains, on board ships or board aircraft, additional requirements can be necessary;
- for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements can be necessary;
- in many countries, the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities specify additional requirements;
- in many countries, national authorities specify additional requirements to BB.22.101.1.
This standard does not apply to
- Microwave ovens including combination microwave ovens for household use covered by IEC 60335-2-25 and used in the following environments by laymen:
• staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments;
• farm houses;
• by clients in hotels, motels and other residential type environments;
• bed and breakfast type environments.
- industrial microwave heating equipment (IEC 60519-6);
- appliances for medical purposes (IEC 60601);
- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).
This fifth edition cancels and replaces the fourth edition published in 2015 including its Amendment 1:2019. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) the appliance used in area open to the public has been introduced in Clause 1, 3.8.107, 7.12, 8.1.1, 11.8, 20.2, 22.103.2, 22.105 and 22.117;
b) Subclauses 5.5, 7.12.1, 11.2, 11.7, 20.1 and 20.101 have been modified to add for stacking installation;
c) Subclauses 7.1, 1

IEC 60335-2-25:2024 deals with the safety of microwave ovens for household and similar use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V including direct current (DC) supplied appliances and battery-operated appliances. This standard also deals with combination microwave ovens, for which normative Annex AA is applicable. This standard also deals with microwave ovens intended to be used on board ships, for which normative Annex BB is applicable. Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless can be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in shops, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard. However, if the appliance is intended to be used professionally to process food for commercial purposes, the appliance is not considered to be for household and similar use only.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account
- persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
- children playing with the appliance.
Attention is drawn to the fact that
- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements can be necessary;
- in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities.
This standard does not apply to
- commercial microwave ovens (IEC 60335-2-90);
- commercial microwave appliances with insertion or contacting applicators (IEC 60335 2 110);
- industrial microwave heating equipment (IEC 60519-6);
- appliances for medical purposes (IEC 60601);
- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).
This eighth edition cancels and replaces the seventh edition published in 2020. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) some subclauses have been modified for the appliance outlets and socket-outlets;
b) Subclause 7.12 has been improved in clarity;
c) Subclauses 8.1.1 and 20.2 have been modified to adopt test probe 19;
d) Subclauses 10.1 and 10.2 have been improved in clarity for inverter type microwave ovens;
e) maximum temperature rises of external accessible surfaces have been added in Subclause 11.8;
f) test criterion has been modified in Subclause 15.101;
g) Subclause 15.102 has been modified for harmonization with IEC 60335-2-6;
h) Subclauses 8.1.3, 15.103, 19.11.2, 19.13, 22.105, 22.106, 22.111 and Figure 101 have been improved in clarity;
i) Subclauses 22.103.2, 22.105 and 22.120 have been modified to adopt test probe 18;
j) Subclause 16.101 has been modified to move the content of 16.101.1, 16.101.2 directly under 16.101;
k) Subclause 22.119 has been modified to move the content of 22.119.1, 22.119.2 and 22.119.3 directly under 22.119.
This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments unless that edition precludes it; in that case, the latest edition that does not preclude it is used. It was established on the basis of the sixth edition (2020) of that standard.

IEC 60335-2-110:2024 deals with the safety of microwave appliances intended for commercial use, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types of appliances.
Appliances covered by this standard incorporate an open-ended applicator for treatment of the load. They are divided into three types:
- with insertion applicator, typically for moisture removal by insertion into holes in floors, walls or ceilings;
- with large area contacting applicator, typically for drying of floors, walls or ceilings;
- with small area contacting applicator, typically for paint removal and spot-heating.
Microwave appliances with insertion applicator, large area contacting applicator or small area contacting applicator are using electromagnetic energy in one or several of the ISM frequency bands between 300 MHz and 30 GHz, for supplying energy to an external load which is heated so that a resulting process of drying, moisture transport which can result in forces due to formation of steam, decomposition or chemical modification, melting, or termination of organisms such as bacteria or fungus occurs.
Appliances with insertion applicator and with large area contacting applicator are portable appliances. Appliances with small area contacting applicator are handheld appliances.
Appliances that use non-electrical energy are within the scope of this standard. The microwave-related portion is considered motor-operated.
The rationales for the microwave barrier and associated leakage tests are described in informative Annex AA.
Attention is drawn to the fact that
- these appliances can radiate microwave energy outside a restricted area where they are used. The additional requirements specified by national authorities responsible for the protection for non-ionising radiation that the limit of power flux density is 10 W/m2, averaged over any time period of 6 min, outside this restricted area is taken into consideration in this standard;
- these appliances are intended to exclusively treat the load in normal operation, i.e. this standard does not apply to appliances or systems employing free space microwave propagation;
- for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements can be necessary;
- in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, and national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and for non-ionising radiation protection.
This standard does not apply to
- household microwave ovens, including combination microwave ovens (IEC 60335-2-25);
- commercial microwave ovens with a cavity door, commercial combination microwave ovens with a cavity door and commercial microwave ovens without a cavity door and with transportation means (IEC 60335-2-90);
- industrial microwave heating equipment (IEC 60519-6);
- appliances for medical purposes (IEC 60601-1);
- appliances and equipment for laboratory use (IEC 61010 series);
- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);
Some of the specifications and tests in this standard are not applicable for other than 2 450 MHz appliances.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2013 and Amendment 1:2019. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
