ISO/TC 79/SC 7 - Aluminium and cast aluminium alloys

This document specifies a visual method for assessing the porosity of the machined surface of aluminium alloy castings. The method does not apply to assessing porosity shown on radiograms.

ISO 3522:2007 specifies the chemical composition limits for aluminium casting alloys and mechanical properties of separately cast test bars for these alloys.

ISO 17615:2007 defines the requirements for grades of alloyed aluminium ingots intended for remelting. It specifies the classifications and designations applicable to these grades, the conditions in which they are produced, their properties and the required identification marking. ISO 17615:2007 does not address the issue of radioactivity. Certain elements, such as Pb, Hg, Cr6 and Cd, may be subject to restrictions.

Specifies general rules for appropriate implementation of radiographic inspection and stresses the technical specifications to be defined for agreement on discontinuity acceptance criteria by this technique. Annex A gives an extract of ASTM Standard E 155-85 "Standard reference radiographs for inspection of aluminium and magnesium castings" (slightly modified), Annex B grades of limiting acceptable discontinuities, Annex C examples of application of the procedures for discontinuity combination, Annex D an example of commercial design of image quality wire indicators.

Specifies a method of inspection. Describes the acceptance conditions, the interpretation of results and includes the contents of the order. Tabulates the severity levels, i.e. number and size of pores over 1 cm^2.

Specifies a method for liquid penetrant inspection of discontinuities rising to the surface of aluminium alloy and magnesium alloy products and castings. Also defines severity levels as a function of the nature and number of discontinuities present. Annex A gives some indication types.

This document specifies the conditions for ordering, and the conditions for producing, testing and accepting castings. Moreover, it gives casting methods and heat treatment, shape and dimensions and marking. It applies to all aluminium alloy gravity castings.

Specifies the chemical composition of some sand cast alloys and permanent mould alloys (table 1), of some pressure die cast alloys (table 2) and of a high purity alloy (table 3). The tables 4 and 5 give tensile strength and elongation to sand cast alloys and permanent mould-cast alloys. Table 6 gives furthermore values for the 0,2 % proof stress and hardness to a high pure alloy.

The standard specifies the dimensions and method of production of reference test bars for aluminium alloy sand castings. The figure shows the dimensions, in millimetres and in inches, of the reference test bar which is to be used, together with those of a mould pattern which allows the casting of four such bars.

The standard specifies the dimensions of a mould to be used for the production of reference test bars for aluminium alloy chill castings. The mould is having the dimensions shown in millimetres (figure 1) and in inches (figure 2).
