General Information
This document specifies the methods of preparation of test specimens and the test methods to be used in determining the properties of PS-I moulding and extrusion materials. It establishes the requirements for handling test material and for conditioning both the test material before moulding and the specimens before testing. This document gives procedures and conditions for the preparation of test specimens and procedures for measuring properties of the materials from which these specimens are made. It lists properties and test methods which are suitable and necessary to characterize PS-I moulding and extrusion materials. The properties have been selected from the general test methods in ISO 10350-1. Other test methods in wide use for, or of particular significance to, these moulding and extrusion materials are also included in this document, as are the designatory properties specified in ISO 19063-1. The methods of specimen preparation and conditioning, the specimen dimensions and the test procedures specified herein are used to obtain reproducible and comparable test results. Values determined will not necessarily be identical to those obtained using specimens of different dimensions or prepared using different procedures.

This document establishes a system of designation for polystyrene thermoplastic material, which can be used as the basis for specifications. The types of polystyrene plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties: a) Vicat softening temperature, and b) melt mass-flow rate. and on information about the intended application and/or method of processing, important properties, additives and colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials. This document is applicable to all amorphous polystyrene homopolymers. It applies to materials ready for normal use, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc. This document does not apply to expanded polystyrene, styrene copolymers, homopolymers of substituted styrene or those modified with other polymers such as elastomers. It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. This document does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which might be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. If such additional properties are required, they are determined in accordance with the test methods specified in ISO 24022-2, if suitable. In order to specify a thermoplastic material for a particular application or to ensure reproducible processing, additional requirements can be given in data block 5 (see 4.6).

ISO 19062-1:2015 establishes a system of designation for acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) moulding and extrusion materials, which may be used as the basis for specifications. The types of ABS plastic are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties: a) Vicat softening temperature; b) melt mass-flow rate; c) Charpy notched impact strength; d) tensile modulus; and on information about composition, intended application and/or method of processing, important properties, additives, colorants, fillers, and reinforcing materials. ISO 19062-1:2015 is applicable to all acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene materials consisting of a continuous phase based mainly on copolymers of styrene (and/or alkyl-substituted styrene) and acrylonitrile and a dispersed elastomeric phase based mainly on polybutadiene, plus other components, in such quantities as specified in the text. It applies to ABS materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules, pellets or chips, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc. ISO 19062-1:2015 does not apply to materials a) with a Charpy notched impact strength of less than three kilojoules per square metre, b) containing less than 50 % by mass of butadiene in the elastomer of the elastomeric phase, and c) containing less than 15 % by mass of acrylonitrile in the continuous phase. It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. This part of ISO 19062 does not provide engineering data, performance data, or data on processing conditions which may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. If such additional properties are required, they will be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in ISO 2580‑2, if suitable. In order to specify a thermoplastic material for a particular application or to ensure reproducible processing, additional requirements may be given in data block 5 (see 3.1).

This part of ISO 19063 is applicable to all impact-resistant polystyrene plastics with a two-phase polymer system comprised of a continuous phase, consisting of polystyrene and/or a copolymer of styrene with an alkyl-substituted styrene, and a dispersed elastomeric phase based on butadiene. It applies to materials ready for normal use, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc. ISO 19063-1:2015 does not apply to expandable materials. It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. This part of ISO 19063 does not provide engineering data, performance data, or data on processing conditions which may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. ISO 19064-1:2015 is applicable to all copolymers of styrene and/or substituted styrene having between 5 % (m/m) and 50 % (m/m) acrylonitrile. It applies to materials ready for normal use, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc. ISO 19064-1:2015 does not apply to expandable materials. It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. This part of ISO 19064 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions which may be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing. If such additional properties are required, they shall be determined in accordance with the test methods specified in ISO 4894-2, if suitable. ISO 2561:2012 specifies a method for the determination of the residual styrene monomer in polystyrene (PS) and impact-resistant polystyrene (PS-I) by gas chromatography. It may also be used for the simultaneous determination of other volatile aromatic hydrocarbons in PS and PS-I.

The principle of the method specified is dissolving a test portion in dimethylformamide and injecting a small volume of the solution into a gas chromatograph equipped with flame ionization detector to separate and detect the volatile components. The solvent contains a known amount of propionitrile or acetonitrile as an internal standard for quantitative evaluation. With this method, a lower detection limit of the order of 3 ppm of acrylonitrile in the copolymer may be expected. To obtain a lower detection limit of the order of 0,3 ppm to 0,4 ppm, an alternative method is specified in annex A.
