Electronic equipment standards

International standardization is one of the key aspects to ensure the competitiveness of your organization in the international market. In recent years, absolutely in every area, the number of businesses providing the same services, selling the same goods or related products in the same category, has been increasing. Many of them are losing their positions, but many remain not only in the market, but also occupy leading positions literally in the first few months of the company's existence. So what's their secret? Since the 21st century is the age of technology, each applied innovation has a certain so-called instructions for use. This concept is more routine and commonplace, but if we talk about higher categorical concepts such as the introduction and operation of new equipment, then in everyday life such a concept as an international standard is used. Today we will introduce you to the key documents that standardize electrical equipment.

Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment - Part 13: Sectional specification - Fixed polypropylene film dielectric metal foil DC capacitors

EN IEC 60384-13:2020

To create a well-functioning system, it is necessary to regulate not only all existing equipment but its individual parts and details. One of the clearest examples of this situation in electrical equipment is the document adapted for the European market EN IEC 60384-13: 2020.

IEC 60384-13:2020 specifies preferred ratings and characteristics, selects from IEC 60384-1:2016 the appropriate quality assessment procedures, tests and measuring methods, and gives general performance requirements for this type of capacitor. Test severities and requirements specified in detail specifications referring to this sectional specification are of an equal or higher performance level. Lower performance levels are not permitted. This part of IEC 60384 applies to fixed direct current capacitors, using as dielectric a polypropylene film with electrodes of thin metal foils. The capacitors covered by this document are intended for use in electronic equipment. Capacitors for electromagnetic interference suppression are not included, but are covered by IEC 60384-14. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

a) revision of all parts of the document based on the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2:2018, and harmonization with other similar kinds of documents;

b) the document structure has been organized to follow new sectional specification structure decided in TC 40;

c) revised tables and Clause 5 so as to prevent duplications and contradictions.

International standardization of even small parts can have a significant impact on the quality of the services provided and the formation of the final product. That is why we recommend that you pay attention to this document if the above equipment is present in your field of activity.

EN IEC 60384-16:2019

Sometimes in different parts of the same standard the same technologies can be described but with different amendments, such as the possibility of their application in related areas but in different equipment. One example is the document, or rather another part of it EN IEC 60384-16: 2019.

IEC 60384-16:2019 applies to fixed capacitors with metallized electrodes and polypropylene dielectric for use in electronic equipment. These capacitors can have "self-healing properties" depending on conditions of use. They are mainly intended for use with direct voltage. Capacitors for alternating voltage and pulse applications are not included, but are covered by IEC 60384-17. Capacitors for electromagnetic interference suppression are not included, but are covered by IEC 60384-14. Capacitors for electrical shock hazard protection (covered by IEC 60065) and fluorescent lamp and motor capacitors are also excluded.

If you were misled when analyzing this standard and the previous one, then you can ask all your questions to the manager of our company in order to make sure what exactly you need for the most productive development at the international level and what relevant documents will help you implement this activity.

Due to the fact that technologies are constantly being updated, there is a need to improve existing standards, which will not only give general recommendations, but also correspond to the latest technologies, as well as recommendations for their implementation into existing processes. But it is not always necessary to change the entire existing standard for this, for such cases certain additions are created, one of which is EN IEC 60384-16: 2019 / AC: 2020-12.

Fixed capacitors for use in electronic equipment - Part 17: Sectional specification - Fixed metallized polypropylene film dielectric AC and pulse capacitors

EN IEC 60384-17:2019

Metal devices are used everywhere and have been used by people for many years. One of the international standards governing electrical equipment and the use of its parts is EN IEC 60384-17: 2019.

IEC 60384-17:2019 is available as IEC 60384-17:2019 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 60384-17:2019 applies to fixed capacitors with metallized electrodes and polypropylene dielectric for use in electronic equipment. Capacitors that have mixed film and metallized electrodes are also within the scope of this standard. These capacitors may have "self-healing" properties depending on conditions of use. Capacitors covered by this specification are mainly intended for use with alternating voltage and/or for pulse applications. The maximum reactive power applicable is 10 000 var and the maximum peak voltage is 3 000 V. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:

all parts of the document have been revised based on the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2:2016 (seventh edition) and harmonization between other similar kinds of documents;

tables and Clause 4 have been revised so as to prevent duplications and contradictions;

new damp heat steady-state robustness classes with test conditions have been added in text, in Clause 4 and in Annex A.

This standard can be applied both separately and in addition to other international regulatory legal acts. That is why it is necessary to understand why you will use this document, for a particular case of using a particular type of electrical equipment or building an entire system for its production.

EN IEC 60384-17:2019/AC:2021-01

In the case of the previous international standard, the document on the recommendations for the operation of electrical equipment has undergone a certain change. But since the changes in the described technologies were insignificant, there was no need to completely change the structure of an already existing and established document. However, an addendum such as EN IEC 60384-17: 2019 / AC: 2021-01 has been created to clarify the innovative processes that have transformed the existing system.

Importance of electric equipment standardization

If you operate on the market for goods or services of electrical equipment, or simply use them in your business, you need to understand that not only quality but also safety affects the financial performance of the activities carried out. International standards are created for both global and local markets showing the importance of their application and compliance with international rules, laws and regulations. If you want to develop and scale in the near future, we recommend that you seek advice from specialists in the selection of international standards and select exactly those documents that will become the beginning of a new stage in your business.
