Standard Specification for Helmets Used in Skateboarding and Trick Roller Skating

ABSTRACT
These specifications cover the design and performance requirements, and associated test procedures for helmets used in the activities of skateboarding and trick roller skating. When tested, the helmets shall meet specified requirements for the peak acceleration and time duration, headforms and sizes, anvils for impact (flat, cylindrical hazard, and triangular hazard anvils), dynamic strength retention system, and impact sites, velocity, and schedule.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers performance requirements for helmets to be used in the activities of skateboarding and trick roller skating.
1.2 All testing and requirements of this specification shall be in accordance with Test Methods F1446, except where noted herein.
1.3 Partial utilization of this specification is prohibited. Any statement of compliance with this specification shall be a certification that the headgear meets all of the requirements of the specification in their entirety. A headgear that fails to meet any one of the requirements of this specification is considered to have failed the specification, and shall not be sold with any indication that it meets parts of the specification.
1.4 This standard is subject to revision at any time by ASTM. It must be reviewed every five years and if not revised either reapproved or withdrawn. References to the standard must include the version date. No references to a version that has been replaced or withdrawn shall be placed on any product or its packaging manufactured more than 24 months after the effective revision or withdrawal date. Go to astm.org to verify the latest version of this standard.
1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
1.7 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM F1492-22: Standard Specification for Helmets Used in Skateboarding and Trick Roller Skating defines the essential design and performance requirements for helmets used by skateboarders and participants in trick roller skating, including aggressive in-line and quad skating activities. Developed by ASTM International, this standard ensures protective headgear meets strict safety criteria through rigorous testing protocols, helping to reduce the risk of injury in dynamic, high-impact sports.

The specification fully aligns with internationally recognized principles for standardization and must be referenced by its version date. Compliance with ASTM F1492-22 is crucial for manufacturers, industry professionals, retailers, and safety certifying bodies involved in the design, production, and certification of skateboard and trick roller skate helmets.

Key Topics

  • Performance Requirements: ASTM F1492-22 sets forth comprehensive performance specifications, including limits for peak acceleration during impact, time duration, and the allowable projection from the helmet’s surface.
  • Helmet Testing: All testing follows the procedures detailed in ASTM Test Methods F1446, encompassing retention system strength, multi-environmental testing (ambient, hot, cold, and wet), and impact attenuation using flat, cylindrical, and triangular hazard anvils.
  • Impact Sites and Velocity: The standard prescribes multiple impact sites and impacts sequenced according to strict schedules, requiring velocities of 4.57 m/s with precise impact location criteria.
  • Headform Sizes: Helmets are tested using a range of headforms to ensure broad protective coverage across varied head sizes.
  • Retention System: The strength and stability of helmet retention systems are verified through dynamic tests to ensure helmets remain secured during impact.
  • Labeling and Certification: Qualified helmets must be permanently labeled, clearly indicating compliance with the standard and specifying intended use for skateboarding and trick roller skating.
  • Partial Compliance Prohibited: Only helmets that fully meet all specified requirements may claim compliance, ensuring a high and consistent level of user protection.

Applications

  • Product Design and Manufacturing: Helmet manufacturers use ASTM F1492-22 as a basis for engineering, prototyping, and testing helmets targeted at skateboarders and trick roller skaters.
  • Consumer Protection: End users and buyers are assured of reliable head protection meeting recognized safety standards, reducing head injury risks during tricks, jumps, and stunts.
  • Retail and Distribution: Retailers can confidently market products labeled with ASTM F1492-22 compliance, offering assurance to safety-conscious customers.
  • Regulatory and Certification Bodies: Organizations responsible for helmet certification, regulatory inspections, and quality control rely on ASTM F1492-22 to assess compliance and performance.
  • Event Organizers: Skate parks, competitions, and events may specify ASTM F1492-22-certified helmets as mandatory equipment, enhancing participant safety.

Related Standards

  • ASTM F1446: Test Methods for Equipment and Procedures Used in Evaluating the Performance Characteristics of Protective Headgear. This standard defines the test methods mandated within ASTM F1492-22.
  • Other ASTM Protective Headgear Standards: Including those specific to cycling, snow sports, or other wheeled activities, which may have distinct performance and testing requirements.
  • International Standardization Principles: ASTM F1492-22 was developed following the WTO TBT Committee’s principles for international standards, ensuring global relevancy and comparability.
