SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The intended use of this guide is to provide a high level summary of relevant test methods and performance criteria of aerosol foam sealants that can be helpful in identifying material properties and suitable applications. Use of this guide can be leveraged to further understand how foam sealant materials can be expected to perform and are positioned for intended use by manufacturers in the marketplace.  
5.2 This guide is limited in scope and does not cover all possible end use applications. Consult the Aerosol Foam Sealant Manufacturer for specific performance capability, third party reports, or International Code Council evaluation reports.
SCOPE
1.1 This guide covers the general use of aerosol polyurethane and aerosol latex foams extruded from pressurized containers intended for building envelope air barrier sealant and adhesive applications in building construction. It also provides an overview of associated standards and test methods that quantify key physical properties that are useful to design professionals, engineers, specifiers, and end users.  
1.2 Currently two main foam sealant types are applicable to this practice, single component polyurethane and latex types.  
1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. SI units provided are for information only and are not considered standard.

Standard Test Method for Accelerated Weathering of Solvent-Release-Type Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 It is difficult to establish a precise correlation between laboratory accelerated and natural weathering because of  (1) geographical climatic variations, local weather variation from normal, and local pollutants and (2) the fact that the acceleration factor is material dependent, varying with the type of material as well as its formulation. This test method is used to determine the resistance of a sealant to laboratory accelerated weathering and, if a control material with known outdoor weathering performance is used, the relative weathering performance of the sealant against that of the control material.  
5.2 This test method is conducted using aluminum channels. Other substrate materials may show different results.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method includes two laboratory accelerated exposure procedures for predicting the effects of ultraviolet or ultraviolet/visible radiation, heat, and moisture on color, chalking, cracking, and adhesion of solvent-release sealants.

4.1 Excessive sealant slump or sag in a vertical joint may cause improper bead shape or inadequate sealant thickness in the completed joint. Slump measurements, as described in this test method, serve to evaluate only this application characteristic; they do not predict the performance capability of the sealant after installation.

Standard Guide for Structural Sealant Glazing

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The old saying “A chain is only as strong as its weakest link” is very applicable to a SSG system. In reality, a SSG system, to be successful, must establish and maintain a chain of adhesion. For example, a factory applied finish must adhere adequately to a metal framing member, a structural glazing sealant to that metal finish, that structural glazing sealant to a reflective coating on a glass lite, and lastly, that reflective coating to a glass surface. This guide will assist in the identification and development of, among others, performance criteria, test methods, and industry practices that should be implemented to obtain the required structural glazing sealant adhesion and compatibility with other system components.  
5.2 Although this guide has been arranged to permit easy access to specific areas of interest, it is highly recommended that the entire guide is read and understood before establishing the requirements for a particular SSG system.  
5.3 This guide should not be the only criteria upon which the design and installation of a SSG system is based. The information herein is provided to assist in the development of a specific program with a goal of achieving a successful SSG system installation. Information and guidelines are provided for the evaluation, design, installation, and maintenance of a SSG system and many of its various components. Considering the range of properties of structural glazing silicone sealants, as well as the many types of framing system designs, material combinations that can be used, various material finishes, and the many types and varieties of accessories, the information contained herein is general in nature.  
5.4 Generally, the design, fabrication, and installation of a SSG system requires more technical knowledge and experience then is required for a conventionally glazed window or curtain wall system. SCOPE
1.1 Structural sealant glazing, hereinafter referred to as SSG, is an application where a sealant not only can function as a barrier against the passage of air and water through a building envelope, but also primarily provides structural support and attachment of glazing or other components to a window, curtain wall, or other framing system.  
1.2 This guide provides information useful to design professionals, manufacturers, contractors, and others for the design and installation of a SSG system. This information is applicable only to this glazing method when used for a building wall that is not more than 15° from vertical; however, limited information is included concerning a sloped SSG application.  
1.3 Only a silicone chemically curing sealant specifically formulated, tested, and marketed for structural sealant glazing is acceptable for a SSG system application.

Standard Test Method for Effects of Heat Aging on Weight Loss, Cracking, and Chalking of Elastomeric Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Weight loss through volatilization of components of a sealant in a building joint may affect sealant appearance because of shrinkage, and sealant performance because of the loss of functional sealant components. Exposure to high-temperature environments will accelerate the loss of volatiles.  
5.2 This test method measures weight loss. It can be used in combination with a knowledge of sealant density to estimate shrinkage. In addition, when compared to sealant theoretical weight solids, it provides an estimate of the extent to which functional sealant components can be volatilized when exposed to high service temperatures. Substantial losses of this type may help predict early failures in durability. Also, development of cracks or chalking, or both, lessens sealant service life. However, a sealant that develops no cracks or chalking, or low weight loss in this test method, does not necessarily assure good durability.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure for determining the effects of heat aging on weight loss, cracking, and chalking of cured-in-place elastomeric joint sealants (single- and multi-component) for use in building construction.

Standard Specification for Cylindrical Sealant Backing for Use with Cold Liquid-Applied Sealants

ABSTRACT
This standard specification covers the basic requirements for cylindrical sealant backing for use with cold liquid-applied sealants. Cylindrical sealant backings are classified into three types: type C, type O, and type B, composed predominantly of closed cell material, open cell material, and bi-cellular material, respectively. Test methods for cylindrical sealant backing include water absorption, density, outgassing, compression deflection and recovery, and tensile strength. The sealant shall be clean, free of scale, foreign matter, oil, or water.
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This specification is designed to give some indication as to the differences in performance for various cylindrical sealant backings.  
5.2 Although this specification qualifies a cylindrical sealant backing for use, it does not address the compatibility of the backing with the sealants with which it will make contact. Sealant compatibility should be confirmed by the sealant manufacturer. Compatibility characteristics of sealants in contact with cylindrical sealant backings can be determined by Test Method C1087.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification covers the basic requirements for cylindrical sealant backing to be used with cold liquid applied sealants for use in building seals.  
1.2 Cylindrical sealant backing serves one or more of the following functions:  
1.2.1 Limits the amount and depth of sealant applied into a joint,  
1.2.2 Acts as a bond breaker to allow joint movement without undue stress to the sealant,  
1.2.3 Provides a form to assist the sealant in developing the proper shape factor, and  
1.2.4 Acts as a barrier to the flow of sealant through the joint.

Standard Test Method for Determining Compatibility of Liquid-Applied Sealants with Accessories Used in Structural Glazing Systems

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 In structural sealant glazing systems, the sealant functions as the structural adhesive and may also function as the primary weather seal. As the structural adhesive, the integrity of the adhesive bond is critical.  
5.2 Changes in color and adhesion after exposure are two of the criteria that can be used to determine the compatibility of the system. Experience has shown that accessories that cause loss of adhesion or discoloration in this test method may also cause these occurrences in actual use.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers a laboratory screening procedure for determining the compatibility of liquid-applied structural sealant glazing sealants when in contact with accessories such as dry glazing gaskets, spacers, shims, and setting blocks after exposure to heat and ultraviolet light.  
1.2 This test method includes the observation of three parameters as follows:  
1.2.1 Changes in the color of the sealant,  
1.2.2 Changes in the adhesion of the sealant to glass, and  
1.2.3 Changes in the adhesion of the sealant to the accessory being tested.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
4.1 This guide provides information and guidelines for consideration by the designer or applicator of a joint seal. It explains the properties and functions of various materials, such as sealant, sealant backing, and primer, among others; and, procedures such as, substrate cleaning and priming, and installation of the components of a sealed joint. It presents guidelines for the use and application of the various materials, design of a sealant joint for a specific application, and environmental conditions and effects that are known to detrimentally affect a sealant joint. The information and guidelines are also useful for those that supply accessories to the sealant industry and for those that install sealants and accessory materials associated with sealant use.  
4.2 In addition to the design and installation data in this guide, consult the sealant manufacturer about applications for its products and their proper use and installation. Considering the range of properties of commercially available sealants, the variety of joint designs possible, and the many conditions of use, the information contained herein is general in nature.  
4.3 It should be realized that a sealant and sealant joint are expected to have a design life during which they remain functional. However, a sealant and sealant joint will also have a service life. The intent is for service life to meet or exceed design life. There are many factors that can affect service life including type of sealant polymer, sealant formulation, compatibility with adjacent materials, installation techniques or deficiencies, sealant joint design (or lack thereof), proper maintenance (or lack thereof), and environmental exposure, among others. The designer of a joint seal should take the above into consideration when designing and specifying sealants for certain applications.

SCOPE
1.1 This guide describes the use of a cold liquid-applied sealant for joint sealing applications. Including joints on buildings and related adjacent areas, such as plazas, decks, and pavements for vehicular or pedestrian use, and types of construction other than highways and airfield pavements and bridges. Information in this guide is primarily applicable to a single and multi-component, cold liquid-applied joint sealant and secondarily to a precured sealant when used with a properly prepared joint opening and substrate surfaces.  
1.2 An elastomeric or non-elastomeric sealant described by this guide should meet the requirements of Specification C834, C920, or C1311.  
1.3 This guide does not provide information or guidelines for the use of a sealant in a structural sealant glazing application. Guide C1401 should be consulted for this information. Additionally, it also does not provide information or guidelines for the use of a sealant in an insulating glass unit edge seal used in a structural sealant glazing application. Guide C1249 should be consulted for this information.  
1.4 Practice C919 should be consulted for information and guidelines for the use of a sealant in an application where an acoustic joint seal is required.

Standard Test Method for Effects of Laboratory Accelerated Weathering on Elastomeric Joint Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 It is known that solar radiation contributes to the degradation of sealants in exterior building joints. The use of a laboratory accelerated weathering machine with actinic radiation, moisture and heat appears to be a feasible means to give indications of early degradation by the appearance of sealant cracking. However, simulated weather factors in combination with extension may produce more severe degradation than weather factors only. Therefore, the effect of the weathering test is made more sensitive by the addition of the bending of the specimen at cold temperature.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers a laboratory procedure for determining the effects of accelerated weathering on cured-in-place elastomeric joint sealants (single- and multicomponent) for use in building construction.

Standard Test Method for Softness of Preformed Tape Sealants

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Preformed tape sealants are tacky, deformable solids that are used under compression between two substrates in a variety of sealing applications. This procedure measures the softness of a preformed tape sealant and gives an indication of the preformed tape sealant's ease of compression during installation. The resistance to penetration may also give an indication of the toughness of the preformed tape sealant.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes a laboratory procedure for determining the softness of preformed tape sealants.  
Note 1: Cone penetration methods applicable to greases and to petrolatum are described in Test Methods D217 and D937. Test Method D2451 also uses a penetration technique for determining the degree of set in sash glazing compounds.  
1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. Temperature values are also provided (in parentheses) in degrees Fahrenheit.  
1.3 The subcommittee with jurisdiction is not aware of any similar ISO standard.
