Standard Specification for Pressure Vessel Plates, Carbon Steel, High Strength, for Moderate and Lower Temperature Service

ABSTRACT
This specification covers killed carbon- manganese-silicon steel plates intended for welded pressure vessels in service at moderate and lower temperatures. As a steel making practice, the steel shall be killed and shall conform to specified fine austenitic grain size requirements. Plates are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition. Plates may be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both. The steel shall conform to the required chemical compositions. The plates, as represented by the tension test specimens, shall conform to the mechanical property requirements.
SCOPE
1.1 This specification2 covers killed carbon-manganese-silicon steel plates intended for welded pressure vessels in service at moderate and lower temperatures.
1.2 The maximum thickness of plates is limited only by the capacity of the material to meet the specified mechanical property requirements.
1.3 For plates produced from coil and furnished without heat treatment or with stress relieving only, the additional requirements, including additional testing requirements and the reporting of additional test results, of Specification A20/A20M apply.
1.4 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.
1.5 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

Overview

ASTM A612/A612M-20 is a widely recognized standard specification for pressure vessel plates made from high-strength carbon-manganese-silicon steel. Developed by ASTM International, this standard applies to steel plates used in the fabrication of welded pressure vessels intended for moderate and lower temperature service. The document outlines requirements for steelmaking practices, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and testing methods to ensure safety, performance, and reliability in pressure vessel applications.

This standard supports manufacturers, engineers, and inspectors in selecting appropriate materials that meet critical demands for strength and toughness under varying temperature conditions, contributing to safer and more efficient vessel designs.

Key Topics

  • Material Composition: Covers requirements for killed carbon-manganese-silicon steel with a fine austenitic grain size, ensuring high structural integrity. Chemical limits are set for key elements such as carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur, among others.
  • Heat Treatment Conditions: Plates are normally supplied in the as-rolled condition, but may be ordered normalized or stress relieved, or both, to accommodate specific application requirements.
  • Mechanical Properties: Specifies tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation properties to guarantee plate performance under operational stresses.
  • Testing and Quality Assurance: Details criteria for tension testing, supplementary testing (e.g., Charpy impact test, ultrasonic examination), and product analysis for conformance to the standard.
  • Dimensional Flexibility: There are no explicit maximum thickness limits, provided the plate meets all specified mechanical property requirements.
  • Units of Measure: Permits the use of either inch-pound or SI units, but requires that only one unit system be used consistently to avoid non-conformance.
  • International Recognition: Developed under principles endorsed by organizations such as the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee, supporting global trade and regulatory acceptance.

Applications

ASTM A612/A612M-20 is essential for industries requiring robust and reliable carbon steel plates for pressure vessel fabrication. Common application areas include:

  • Oil and Gas: Construction of storage tanks, separators, and processing vessels operating at moderate and lower temperatures.
  • Chemical Processing: Fabrication of reactors and containment vessels exposed to pressure and thermal cycling.
  • Power Generation: Boilers and heat exchangers that must withstand pressure and temperature variations.
  • Industrial Manufacturing: Any use where durable, pressure-rated steel plates are required in moderate or low-temperature environments.

Following this standard ensures that pressure vessels maintain structural integrity, reduce risk of failure, and comply with international safety regulations.

Related Standards

ASTM A612/A612M-20 references and works in conjunction with several related standards to provide a comprehensive framework for steel plate quality and testing, such as:

  • ASTM A20/A20M - General Requirements for Steel Plates for Pressure Vessels: outlines generic quality, testing, and ordering requirements.
  • ASTM A435/A435M - Straight-Beam Ultrasonic Examination of Steel Plates: provides ultrasonic test methods.
  • ASTM A577/A577M - Ultrasonic Angle-Beam Examination of Steel Plates: describes additional ultrasonic examination procedures.
  • ASTM A578/A578M - Straight-Beam Ultrasonic Examination for Special Applications: defines examination of rolled plates for specific end uses.
  • ASME SA-612/SA-612M - Offers similar requirements and is referenced for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code applications.

Understanding and implementing ASTM A612/A612M-20 ensures compliance with industry best practices, improves operational safety, and facilitates international acceptance of pressure vessel components.
