EN ISO 24263:2020 - Footwear: Attachment strength of straps, trims and accessories specifies a laboratory method to determine the attachment strength of footwear upper components joined to the sole, and of hooks, eyelets and trims. Prepared by ISO/TC 216 (Footwear) and adopted by CEN (as EN ISO 24263:2020), the standard defines test apparatus, sample preparation, conditioning, test procedures and how to report results for tensile attachment testing.

  • Tensile testing machine with jaw separation rate (100 ± 10) mm/min.

  • Vernier calliper with 0.5 mm divisions; laces with higher strength than eyelets/hooks.
• Sampling & conditioning:
  • Straps: test at least two shoes; measure strap width at feather line.
  • Trims: test at least five pieces; test pieces must allow a 1 mm gauge insertion between trim and upper.
  • Hooks/eyelets: test at least five test-pieces from separate uppers or detached uppers.
  • Condition samples 24 h at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH per ISO 18454.
• Preparation & procedure:
  • Straps: make an incision ~15 mm from the strap–sole join so the strap is cut but not sole material; clamp shoe and strap to simulate in-use tension; record force to separate strap.
  • Trims: clamp trim and test-piece, run tensile test; record maximum force and failure mode.
  • Hooks/eyelets: align jaw center with eyelet/hook, pass lace through and load until failure; record maximum force and failure type.
• Results & reporting:
  • Results expressed in Newton (N).
  • For straps include individual maximum force and strap width; for trims and eyelets report average/maximum values and failure mode (detachment, breakage, sole failure).
