Overview

EN ISO 1234:1997 / ISO 1234:1997 - Split pins defines the characteristics, dimensions and requirements for split pins (also called cotter pins or goupilles fendues). Prepared by ISO/TC 2 (Fasteners) and published as the second edition in 1997, this standard is the international reference for manufacturing, inspection and designation of split pins and has been adopted as an EN standard in many countries (e.g., SIST EN ISO 1234:2001).

Key Topics

  • Scope: Specifies characteristics of split pins including dimensions, materials, workmanship and acceptance criteria.
  • Dimensions: Detailed nominal sizes and lengths are given in Table 1 and Table 2 (dimensions in millimetres). Nominal hole sizes cover a range from small (≈0.6 mm) up to larger commercial sizes (up to 20 mm and beyond for commercial lengths).
  • Tolerances: Recommended tolerance classes for pin-hole diameters: H13 for nominal size < 1.2 mm and H14 for nominal size > 1.2 mm.
  • Materials: Permitted materials include steel (St), copper‑zinc alloy (Cu Zn), copper (Cu), aluminium alloy (Al), austenitic stainless steel (A) and other materials agreed between customer and supplier.
  • Mechanical requirement (ductility): Each leg of the split pin shall withstand being bent back upon itself once with no visible fracture at the bend.
  • Surface finish & coatings: Parts may be supplied plain, lubricated or with coatings as agreed. For electroplated and phosphate coatings see referenced standards (ISO 4042, ISO 9717).
  • Workmanship & acceptability: Pins must be free of burrs and defects; the eye should be as circular as possible and the combined cross‑section of the two legs should be circular. Acceptance inspection follows ISO 3269.
  • Designation example: Split pin ISO 1234 – 5 × 50 – St (nominal size 5 mm, length 50 mm, steel).

Applications

  • Use in mechanical assemblies to secure clevis pins, bolts and shafts where a simple, removable locking device is required.
  • Common across automotive, agricultural machinery, railway, industrial equipment and light engineering.
  • Engineers, fastener manufacturers, purchasing/specification teams, quality inspectors and maintenance personnel rely on EN ISO 1234 to ensure interchangeability, safety and correct selection of split pins.

Related Standards

  • ISO 3269 - Fasteners: Acceptance inspection
  • ISO 4042 - Fasteners: Electroplated coatings
  • ISO 9717 - Phosphate conversion coatings for metals

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard ISO 1234 was prepared by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 2, Fasteners.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 1234:1976),
which has been technically revised.
