Overview
EN 12370:2020 - Natural stone test methods: Determination of resistance to salt crystallisation is a CEN standard that specifies a laboratory test to assess the relative resistance of natural stone (with open porosity > 5 %) to damage caused by salt crystallisation. The method uses repeated cycles of immersion in a 14 % sodium sulphate decahydrate solution followed by controlled drying to measure mass change and/or the number of cycles to disintegration. The test is intended for durability assessment of stones exposed to salt weathering and is not required for low-porosity materials.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope and applicability: Applies to natural stones whose open porosity is greater than 5 % (open porosity measured per EN 1936). Not intended for low-porosity stones.
- Specimen preparation:
- Minimum six representative specimens (sampling usually by the client).
- Cubes of (40 ± 1) mm sides, wet diamond sawn and ground.
- Wash loose material and dry to constant mass at (105 ± 5) °C.
- Test solution and cycles:
- Use a fresh 14 % sodium sulphate decahydrate solution (density ~1 055 kg/m3 at 20 °C) for each cycle.
- Soak specimens 2 h at (20 ± 0.5) °C, then dry in a ventilated oven with controlled humidity and heat-up to (105 ± 5) °C.
- Repeat the soak/dry cycle 15 times (or until specimen failure).
- Apparatus and controls:
- Ventilated oven capable of (105 ± 5) °C and initial high relative humidity.
- Precision balance (± 0.001 g) and controlled temperature bath/room for soaking.
- Results and reporting:
- Express results as relative mass difference (ΔM) (% mass loss or gain) or number of cycles to failure.
- Record photographic evidence and report specimen details, test conditions, deviations and mean results.
Applications and Users
- Practical uses:
- Durability assessment of natural stone for façades, paving, coastal or de-icing salt exposure, and heritage conservation.
- Material selection for architects, specifiers and engineers when salt weathering is a risk.
- Quality control by quarry operators and stone suppliers.
- Condition evaluation and material selection in building conservation and restoration.
- Typical users:
- Accredited test laboratories, stone producers, architects, civil and structural engineers, conservators, and procurement teams specifying stone products.

The standard EN 12370:2020, titled "Natural stone test methods - Determination of resistance to salt crystallisation," provides a comprehensive framework for assessing the durability of natural stones in contexts where salt crystallization may pose a risk. The primary scope of this standard is to define a specific test method aimed at evaluating the relative resistance of natural stones that exhibit an open porosity greater than 5%. By focusing on stones with higher porosity, the standard identifies a critical subset of materials that are particularly vulnerable to salt-related damage, thus ensuring that relevant and appropriate testing is conducted. One of the strengths of EN 12370:2020 is its precise guidelines on measuring porosity in accordance with EN 1936, which ensures reliable and consistent results across different testing scenarios. This integration of porosity measurement supports the standard's main goal of protecting natural stones from crystallization-induced damage, a concern for construction and restoration projects involving architectural heritage or any outdoor applications. Furthermore, the standard's relevance is amplified by its application in various environmental conditions where salt crystallization is prevalent, such as coastal regions or areas with de-icing salts. By standardizing this testing method, EN 12370:2020 not only aids manufacturers and suppliers in assessing their products but also provides architects, engineers, and conservationists with essential data for making informed decisions about material selection. The document establishes a necessary protocol to bridge the gap between natural stone properties and the challenges posed by environmental factors, thereby emphasizing the importance of durability in stone materials. Overall, EN 12370:2020 stands as a vital resource in the field of natural stone testing, promoting best practices that enhance the longevity and performance of this aesthetically and culturally significant material.
