In dieser internationalen Norm ist der instrumentierte Kerbschlagbiegeversuch nach Charpy (V-Kerb) für Stahlerzeugnisse und die Anforderungen an die Meßeinrichtungen und die Auswerteverfahren festgelegt. Die Anwendung dieser Norm kann bei Versuchen mit anderen metallischen Werkstoffen vereinbart werden. Mit dem Versuch können weitergehende Aussagen über das Bruchverhalten des zu prüfenden Werkstoffs gewonnen werden.

La présente Norme internationale peut être appliquée à d'autres matériaux métalliques par accord. Cet essai fournit des informations supplémentaires sur le comportement à la rupture du produit essayé.

Using this method to determine Knoop hardness from smaller indentations is outside the scope of this document as results would suffer from large uncertainties due to the limitations of optical measurement and imperfections in tip geometry. ISO 14577-1 allows the determination of hardness from smaller indentations.
A periodic verification method is specified for routine checking of the testing machine in service by the user.
Special considerations for Knoop testing of metallic coatings can be found in ISO 4516.

These conversions are not applicable to:
a) cold reduced steels;
b) quenched and tempered steels;
c) austenitic steels.
These conversions are not applicable when the gauge length exceeds  or where the width to thickness ratio of the test piece exceeds 20.
