Overview

EN 19:2023 - Industrial valves - Marking of metallic valves (CEN) specifies requirements and methods for marking industrial metallic valves. It covers where and how markings are applied (integral on body/bonnet, on flanges, on marking plates or identification plates) and defines mandatory, supplementary and other marking rules to ensure safe identification, installation and compliance. The standard excludes plastic valves and is intended to be used together with valve product or performance standards and applicable pressure-equipment legislation.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability
    • Applies to industrial metallic valves; plastic valves are excluded.
    • To be read in conjunction with valve product/performance standards and relevant EU pressure-equipment rules (see Annex ZA and Annex A).
  • Types of markings
    • Integral markings (cast, forged or stamped on valve body/bonnet).
    • Marking plate (for mandatory markings).
    • Identification plate (for non-mandatory/additional markings).
  • Mandatory vs supplementary markings
    • Mandatory markings include identification items required for safe use and regulatory compliance (e.g., nominal size, PN/Class designation, material, manufacturer, maximum/minimum allowable limits).
    • Supplementary markings provide additional technical or commercial details (e.g., trim, service symbols, flow coefficients, coating/lining, cast (heat) ID).
  • Marking details (selection from Table 1 and Clause 5)
    • Nominal size (DN / NPS / thread size)
    • PN or Class designation and PS (maximum allowable pressure)
    • Material and cast/heat identification
    • Manufacturer/importer name and registered trade details
    • Flow direction arrow and closing direction
    • Maximum/minimum allowable temperatures (TS max / TS min)
    • Year of manufacture, trim, internal coating/lining, threaded-end identification, ring-joint number, allowable differential pressure, flow coefficients
  • Application rules
    • Painted-on markings are not permitted.
    • Marking plates and fixing means must resist atmospheric corrosion and be suitable for the valve’s allowable temperatures.
    • Mandatory markings are language-independent; descriptive words should be in manufacturer language or an official CEN language (EN/FR/DE) when needed.
    • Omissions and alternative placements are allowed only as specified by product standards or when valves are exempt from pressure-equipment rules.

Applications - who uses EN 19:2023

  • Valve manufacturers (marking design, production and quality control)
  • Compliance engineers and regulatory bodies (pressure equipment conformity)
  • Procurement and asset-management teams (traceability, inspection records)
  • Commissioning, maintenance and inspection personnel (safe installation and operation)
  • Designers and specifiers writing valve product/performance standards or purchasing specifications

Related standards and references

  • EN 736 series (valve terminology)
  • EN 764-1 (pressure equipment vocabulary)
  • EN 1092 / EN 1759 (flanges and joints)
  • EN 12516 series (shell design strength)
  • Annex A in EN 19 maps marking items to EU pressure-equipment requirements (useful for PED compliance)

EN 19:2023 is essential for consistent valve identification, traceability and regulatory compliance across industrial piping systems. Keywords: EN 19:2023, industrial valves, marking of metallic valves, valve marking requirements, CEN, valve identification.
