M/601 - PED 2

Purpose

The purpose of Mandate M/601 (PED 2) is to issue a standardisation request aimed at harmonising standards related to pressure equipment and assemblies. This initiative supports the implementation of Directive 2014/68/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council, which regulates the design, manufacture, and conformity assessment of pressure equipment within the European Union.

Standardisation request

The European Commission, through its implementing decision dated 1 March 2024, formally requests the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) to develop, revise, or maintain European standards relevant to pressure equipment and assemblies. These standards are intended to facilitate compliance with Directive 2014/68/EU, ensuring safety, interoperability, and regulatory alignment across Member States.

Expected deliverables

Deliverables under this mandate are expected to include harmonised European standards that cover all relevant aspects of pressure equipment and assemblies defined by Directive 2014/68/EU. This may encompass specifications, testing methods, safety requirements, and conformity assessment procedures. The standards will serve as the technical basis for demonstrating compliance with the directive and are integral to the CE marking process.

Context

Directive 2014/68/EU, commonly known as the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), establishes a regulatory framework for the free movement of pressure equipment within the EU by setting essential safety requirements. The continuous update and harmonisation of standards ensure that technological advances and safety needs are reflected in the regulatory landscape. Mandate M/601 follows previous standardisation efforts and aims to incorporate current industry practices and regulatory requirements into the relevant European standards. The resolution reference CEN/BT C037/2024 indicates the formal approval and oversight by CEN’s Board.
