Jewellery - Ring-sizes - Definition, measurement and designation (ISO 8653:2016)

ISO 8653:2016 specifies a method to measure the ring-size using a ring stick with defined characteristics, which is mainly used during manufacturing steps, and specifies the designation of the ring-size.
NOTE For jeweller-consumer relationships, the finger size is measured with a finger gauge set made up of a ring for each size with the same diameter and tolerance than the ring stick ones.

Nakit - Velikosti prstanov - Definicija, meritve in označevanje (ISO 8653:2016)

Overview

prEN ISO 8653 (ISO 8653:2016) is an international jewellery standard that defines ring-sizes - definition, measurement and designation. It specifies a reproducible method for measuring ring internal circumference using a ring stick with precisely defined characteristics (primarily for manufacturing and quality-control steps) and provides rules for how ring-sizes are to be designated. For customer fitting, the standard notes that a finger gauge set (rings for each size) with the same diameters/tolerances should be used.

Key Topics and Technical Requirements

  • Measurement method: Slide the ring down the ring stick without external force; the measurement point is the ring’s contact point on the stick and depends on the ring’s inside profile.
  • Ring-stick characteristics:
    • Measurement scale length: 160.0 mm ± 0.5 mm
    • Material: metal or material with equivalent wear resistance
    • Minimum ring-size: 41; maximum ring-size: 76
    • Specified diameters and tolerances for ring-sizes (examples from the standard):
      • Size 41 → 13.05 mm ± 0.02 mm
      • Size 51 → 16.23 mm ± 0.02 mm
      • Size 61 → 19.42 mm ± 0.02 mm
      • Size 71 → 22.60 mm ± 0.02 mm
      • Size 76 → 24.19 mm ± 0.02 mm
  • Inside profiles:
    • Rounded inside profile - measurement point is mid-thickness.
    • Flat inside profile - measurement point is at the bottom of the thickness.
  • Particular ring shapes: Procedures for rings with mountings/signet faces, multiple interlaced circles, and square rings (positioning rules and how to determine the measurement point).
  • Designation rule: Indicate the standard number followed by the inner circumference in millimetres rounded to the nearest mm (e.g., Ring‑size ISO 8653 - 43). If the ring is marked, only the circumference may be shown.

Applications and Practical Use

  • Ensures consistent ring sizing across manufacturers, brands and quality-control labs.
  • Used in production, inspection and acceptance testing during jewellery manufacture.
  • Useful for designers, bench jewellers, brand quality managers, and compliance teams to reduce disputes over sizing methods.
  • Guides jewellers in consumer-facing measurement by clarifying that a finger gauge set should match ring-stick tolerances.

Who Uses This Standard

  • Jewellery manufacturers and production supervisors
  • Quality-control and inspection laboratories
  • Brand principals and purchasing/specification teams
  • Retail jewellers and bench-makers (for consistent sizing practice)

Related

  • Developed under ISO/TC 174 (Jewellery). It replaces the earlier 1986 edition and provides updated measurement methods, diameter/tolerance tables and examples for special ring shapes.
