Overview

prEN ISO 20500-7 (ISO/DIS 20500-7:2020) - Mobile road construction machinery - Safety - Part 7: Specific requirements for slipform paver and texture curing machines - is a CEN/ISO draft standard that complements ISO 20500-1. It addresses significant hazards associated with slipform pavers and texture curing machines throughout the machine’s lifetime when used as intended or under foreseeable misuse. The document adds or replaces requirements from the common Part 1 and does not repeat those common requirements. Notably, lightning is excluded from its scope.

Key topics and technical requirements

The standard focuses on practical safety and verification measures for road construction machinery. Major topics include:

  • Risk reduction and safety requirements - design principles aligned with ISO 12100 for residual hazards and whole-life safety.
  • Visibility - performance criteria and visibility assessment for critical machine boundaries and operator sightlines.
  • Operation and handling - safe control layout, handling of attachments (e.g., trimmers, tie-bar inserters, dowel bar inserters).
  • Operator’s station and access - safe access systems, ergonomics and protection of the operator’s work area.
  • Protection and guarding - guarding of moving parts, conveyors and trimming tools to prevent entanglement and crushing.
  • Signal devices and warnings - labelling and audible/visual alarms consistent with ISO 9244 and other labelling guidance.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) - requirements to avoid interference with controls and sensors.
  • Noise and vibration - measurement and declaration procedures; Annex A provides a noise test code for slipform pavers (sound power and operator emission levels).
  • Verification and information for use - test methods, verification of protective measures, and required information in the instruction handbook.
  • Annexes - examples of machine types, list of significant hazards, and linkage to Directive 2006/42/EC.

Applications and users

prEN ISO 20500-7 is intended for:

  • Manufacturers and OEMs of slipform pavers and texture curing machines designing safety into machinery and attachments.
  • Safety engineers and designers performing risk assessments and implementing protective measures.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies verifying noise, visibility and guarding requirements.
  • Procurement and fleet managers setting contract and compliance specifications for road construction equipment.
  • Maintenance personnel who rely on specified access, guarding and information for safe servicing.

Practical applications include safer machine design, reduced operator exposure to noise and hazards, compliant documentation for CE/market access, and clearer specifications for procurement and inspections.
