This document specifies three methods for the determination of the bulk density of granular refractory materials (grain density) having a grain size larger than 2 mm:
— Method 1: mercury method with vacuum;
— Method 2: arrested water absorption method;
— Method 3: vacuum method with spin dryer option according to ISO 5017.
Method 1 is intended as the reference method.
NOTE Depending on the nature of the material tested, the three methods can give different results. Any statement of the value of a bulk density can therefore be accompanied by an indication of the method used or to be used in case of dispute.
The same method can be used for the determination of the volume of the sample, for selecting and preparing the sample, for calculating the bulk density and for presenting the test report.
Feuerfeste Erzeugnisse - Bestimmung der Rohdichte von körnigem Gut (Korndichte) (ISO 8840:2021)
Dieses Dokument legt drei Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Rohdichte von körnigen feuerfesten Werkstoffen (Korndichte) mit einer Korngröße größer als 2 mm fest:
Verfahren 1: Quecksilber Verdrängungsverfahren unter Vakuum;
Verfahren 2: Verfahren mit gestoppter Wasseraufnahme;
Verfahren 3: Vakuumverfahren mit Zentrifugen Option nach ISO 5017.
Verfahren 1 ist als Referenzverfahren vorgesehen.
ANMERKUNG Abhängig von der Art des geprüften Werkstoffs können die drei Verfahren zu unterschiedlichen Ergeb¬nissen führen. Jedem angegebenen Wert einer Rohdichte kann daher eine Angabe des angewendeten Verfahrens oder des im Streitfall anzuwendenden Verfahrens beigefügt werden.
Das gleiche Verfahren kann für die Bestimmung des Volumens der Probe, für die Auswahl und Vorbereitung der Probe, für die Berechnung der Rohdichte und für die Erstellung des Prüfberichts angewendet werden.

Le présent document spécifie trois méthodes permettant de déterminer la masse volumique apparente des matériaux réfractaires en grains (masse volumique des grains) dont la granulométrie est supérieure à 2 mm:
— Méthode 1: méthode au mercure sous vide;
— Méthode 2: méthode par arrêt de l’absorption d’eau;
— Méthode 3: méthode sous vide avec option d’essorage conformément à l’ISO 5017.
La méthode 1 est la méthode de référence.
NOTE Selon la nature du matériau soumis à l’essai, les trois méthodes peuvent donner des résultats différents. Tout énoncé de la valeur d’une masse volumique apparente peut par conséquent s’accompagner d’une mention de la méthode utilisée ou à utiliser en cas de litige.
La même méthode peut être utilisée pour déterminer le volume de l’échantillon, pour choisir et préparer l’échantillon, pour calculer sa masse volumique apparente et pour présenter le rapport d’essai.

V skladu z dokumentom ISO.
Ta dokument določa tri metode za ugotavljanje prostorninske mase drobljenih (zrnatih) ognjevzdržnih materialov (gostota zrn) z velikostjo zrna več kot 2 mm:
– metoda 1: vakuumska metoda z živim srebrom;
– metoda 2: metoda z zadrževanjem absorpcije vode;
– metoda 3: vakuumska metoda z možnostjo centrifuge v skladu s standardom ISO 5017.
Metoda 1 je predvidena kot referenčna metoda.
OPOMBA: Glede na vrsto materiala, ki se preskuša, se lahko rezultati treh metod med seboj razlikujejo.
Ob vsaki navedbi vrednosti prostorninske mase je mogoče navesti tudi metodo, ki je bila uporabljena oziroma jo je treba uporabiti v primeru spora.
Isto metodo je mogoče uporabiti za določanje prostornine vzorca, izbiro in
pripravo vzorca, izračun prostorninske mase ter predstavitev poročila o preskušanju.

The text of ISO 8840:2021 has been prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 33 "Refractories” of the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and has been taken over as EN ISO 8840:2024 by
Technical Committee CEN/TC 187 “Refractory products and materials” the secretariat of which is held
by BSI.
This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of an
identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by December 2024, and conflicting national standards
shall be withdrawn at the latest by December 2024.
