Overview
EN 754-4:2008 - published by CEN - specifies the tolerances on dimensions and form for cold drawn aluminium and aluminium-alloy square bars with widths across flats from 3 mm to 100 mm. Temper designations referenced in this part follow EN 515. The standard defines dimensional limits, form tolerances and measurement methods used for inspection, ordering and quality control of cold drawn square bars.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to cold drawn square bars (3 mm ≤ width across flats ≤ 100 mm).
- Width across flats tolerances (Table 1): negative allowances vary by size, for example:
- 3–6 mm: −0.08 mm
- 6–10 mm: −0.09 mm
- 10–18 mm: −0.11 mm
- 18–30 mm: −0.13 mm
- 30–50 mm: −0.16 mm
- 50–65 mm: −0.19 mm
- 65–80 mm: −0.30 mm
- 80–100 mm: −0.35 mm
- Corner radii (Table 2): maximum permitted radii depend on size (e.g. 3–8 mm → 0.4 mm; 80–100 mm → 2.0 mm).
- Length tolerances (fixed lengths, Table 3): if fixed lengths are ordered, tolerances are:
- L ≤ 2 000 mm: +5 / 0 mm
- 2 000 < L ≤ 5 000 mm: +7 / 0 mm
- L > 5 000 mm: +10 / 0 mm
If no fixed length is specified, bars may be supplied in random lengths (to be agreed).
- Squareness of cut ends: must be within half the fixed-length tolerance range (e.g., for +10/0 mm tolerance, squareness ≤ 5 mm).
- Straightness (Table 4): For widths ≥10 mm, deviation limits apply (example: max 2 mm per metre; localized kink ≤ 0.6 mm in any 300 mm portion).
- Twist (Table 5): tolerances given per 1 000 mm and as total length limits (e.g. 10–30 mm width → 1.0 mm/1000 mm, total 3.0 mm). For widths <10 mm, straightness and twist tolerances must be agreed.
- Squareness (cross-section): maximum deviation = 0.005 × width across flats (Table 6).
- Tempers exceptions: Straightness and twist tolerances do not automatically apply to tempers O and Tx51 - these must be agreed between supplier and purchaser.
Applications and users
- For manufacturers, extruders/drawing mills, and quality control teams to specify and verify product conformity.
- For buyers, procurement and engineers to define acceptance criteria in orders (fixed lengths, tolerances, temper-dependent requirements).
- For design and structural engineers, machinists and fabricators who require precise dimensional and form control for assembly, machining and performance specifications.
- Useful in supply-chain contracts, inspection plans, and compliance testing for aluminium square bar products.
