Overview
EN 1179:2003 is the CEN European Standard that specifies the classification, chemical composition, marking and other requirements for primary zinc supplied mainly in ingot form. The standard covers the internationally traded primary zinc grades and clarifies ordering, manufacture, sampling and inspection requirements. It explicitly excludes requirements for secondary zinc produced by remelting.
Primary zinc under EN 1179:2003 is normally intended for remelting or further metallurgical processing and is specified to ensure consistent quality and traceability across international trade.
Key Topics
- Scope and definitions: primary zinc, ingot, cast, batch, bundle and jumbo are defined to standardize terminology for production and trade.
- Classification and grades: the standard lists traded grades (Z1 to Z5) with colour codes (White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Black) and nominal zinc content and impurity limits as given in Table 1 of the standard.
- Chemical composition: specified maximum levels for impurities (lead, cadmium, iron, tin, copper, aluminium) and rules for rounding analytical results.
- Manufacture and shape: ingots shall be produced by casting from liquid primary zinc; ingot shape is by supplier unless otherwise ordered.
- Surface condition: ingot surfaces must not affect composition or be detrimental to end use.
- Sampling and analysis: sampling is to follow EN 12060; dispute-resolution chemical analysis methods reference EN 12441 parts 3, 5 and 6.
- Marking and labelling: minimum markings include producer mark, zinc grade (or colour code), batch/cast reference and mass of ingot or bundle.
- Inspection documents: supplier can provide either a certificate of analysis or a declaration of conformity on request.
Applications
EN 1179:2003 is used by purchasers, producers, foundries and remelters to:
- Ensure quality control and consistent chemical composition of primary zinc ingots.
- Provide traceability through batch, cast and producer marking for incoming metal supplies.
- Facilitate international procurement and trade compliance by standardising grade definitions and documentation.
- Support production planning where ingot mass, shape and surface condition affect handling and remelting operations.
By using EN 1179:2003 in procurement and inspection routines, organisations reduce disputes and speed acceptance of zinc consignments.
Related Standards

- EN 12441-3, EN 12441-5, EN 12441-6 - Chemical analysis methods referenced for dispute resolution
- EN 988, EN 1774, EN 12844, EN 13283 - Other zinc and zinc alloy product standards
For specification, testing and contractual certainty when buying or selling primary zinc, EN 1179:2003 provides the essential classification, compositional limits and documentary controls required in international zinc trade.
