Water quality - Toxicity test for assessing the inhibition of nitrification of activated sludge microorganisms (ISO 9509:2006)

ISO 9509:2006 specifies a method for assessing the short-term inhibitory effect of waters, waste waters or test substances on nitrifying bacteria in activated sludge. The inhibitory effect is estimated over an exposure period of usually 3 h or up to 24 h with weakly nitrifying sludge.
The method is applicable to nitrifying activated sludge derived from domestic and synthetic sewage and also to sludges from industrial and mixed domestic and industrial waste waters.
The nitrifying activity of the sludge is verified by testing in the presence and absence of a specific inhibitor. If the nitrification rate is within a suitable range for the test, i.e. 2 mg of nitrogen per gram of suspended solid and hour to 6,5 mg of nitrogen per gram of suspended solids and hour, the sludge may be used directly. If not, adjustments are necessary.

Diese Internationale Norm legt ein Verfahren zur Abschätzung der kurzzeitigen Hemmwirkung eines Testguts auf nitrifizierende Bakterien in Belebtschlamm fest. Die Hemmwirkung wird über eine Testdauer von 3 h oder bei schwach nitrifizierendem Belebtschlamm über bis zu 24 h bestimmt.
Das Verfahren ist anwendbar auf nitrifizierenden Belebtschlamm aus kommunalen Kläranlagen und auf synthetisches Abwasser sowie auf Schlämme aus industriellen und aus gemischten Abwässern kommunaler und industrieller Herkunft.
Zunächst wird die Nitrifikationsaktivität des nitrifizierenden Belebtschlamms durch Zugabe eines speziellen Inhibitors (z. B. N-Allylthioharnstoff; siehe Anhang A) geprüft. Liegt die Nitrifikationsrate in einem für die Untersuchung geeigneten Bereich (z. B. 2 mg bis 6,5 mg Stickstoff je Gramm suspendiertem Stoff und Stunde) wird der Schlamm direkt eingesetzt; andernfalls wird modifiziert vorgegangen (siehe Abschnitt 9).
Das Verfahren ist auf wasserlösliche, nicht flüchtige chemische Stoffe sowie auf Abwasser anwendbar.
Schlämme verschiedener Herkunft reagieren bei vorgegebener Konzentration unterschiedlich auf einen Inhibitor, das kann zum Teil auf Reaktionen zwischen dem Inhibitor und den Bestandteilen des Belebtschlamms zurückgeführt werden, die zu einer Verminderung der Hemmung führen. Da die Untersuchung nur wenige Stunden dauert, kann es sein, dass die Hemmwirkung über einen längeren Zeitabschnitt, z. B. in einer kontinuierlich betriebenen Abwasserreinigungsanlage mit Belebtschlamm, ab- oder zunehmen kann (siehe ISO 5667 16).

L'ISO 9509:2006 spécifie une méthode d'évaluation de l'effet inhibiteur à court terme des eaux et des eaux résiduaires ou des substances d'essai sur les bactéries nitrifiantes des boues activées. L'effet inhibiteur est estimé sur une période d'exposition habituelle de 3 h, pouvant aller jusqu'à 24 h dans le cas de boues faiblement nitrifiantes.
La méthode est applicable aux boues activées nitrifiantes provenant d'eaux usées d'origine domestique et de synthèse, ainsi qu'aux boues provenant d'eaux résiduaires industrielles, mélangées ou non avec des eaux résiduaires d'origine domestique.
L'activité nitrifiante de la boue est vérifiée par des essais en présence et en l'absence d'un inhibiteur spécifique. Si le taux de nitrification se situe à l'intérieur d'une plage qui convient pour l'essai, c'est-à-dire de 2 mg d'azote par gramme de matière en suspension par heure à 6,5 milligrammes d'azote par gramme de matière en suspension par heure, on peut utiliser la boue directement; si ce n'est pas le cas, des ajustements sont nécessaires.
Cette méthode est applicable aux substances chimiques non volatiles, solubles dans l'eau ainsi qu'aux eaux résiduaires.

"Water quality" in collaboration with Technical Committee CEN/TC 230 "Water analysis", the
secretariat of which is held by DIN.

This European Standard shall be given the status of a national standard, either by publication of
an identical text or by endorsement, at the latest by January 2007, and conflicting national
standards shall be withdrawn at the latest by January 2007.

This document supersedes EN ISO 9509:1995.
