Overview
prEN ISO 18393-1 (CEN / ISO/DIS 18393-1:2022) specifies a laboratory test method to determine ageing by settlement of blown loose‑fill insulation applied horizontally in ventilated attics. The method simulates the effects of cyclic humidity and temperature exposure to measure changes in installed thickness and the resulting impact on thermal performance.
Key elements of the method include controlled specimen preparation, climate cycling, repeated thickness measurement and expression of settlement as a percentage of the initial installed thickness.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Measures reduction in installed thickness (settlement) of blown loose‑fill insulation in ventilated lofts/attics under simulated humidity and temperature cycles.
- Principle: Blow insulation into a specimen box, condition and expose it to defined humidity/temperature cycles while monitoring thickness at nine fixed positions; calculate mean settlement.
- Specimen container: Typical box internal dimensions given as 600 mm × 600 mm × 300 mm (height). Higher boxes may be used for greater thicknesses.
- Climate chamber: Must provide uniform control across specimens in the range (5 ± 1) °C to (60 ± 1) °C and (50 ± 5) % RH to (85 ± 5) % RH.
- Cycling protocol: Four cycles, each with two periods of 14 days: a cooler, high‑humidity period at (23 ± 1) °C and (85 ± 5) % RH, followed by a hot, low‑humidity period at (50 ± 2) °C and (15 ± 5) % RH. Thickness readings are taken at fixed intervals and at least at the end of each period.
- Measurements and calculations: Thickness measured to nearest millimetre at nine positions (EN ISO 29466 principles) with a 20 Pa load; settlement expressed as percentage rounded to nearest unit. Test reports include initial/final mean values and settlement progression.
Applications
This standardized test method is intended to support:
- Product performance assessment and comparative evaluation of blown loose‑fill insulation products.
- Durability and ageing evaluations for specification and selection in building projects involving ventilated attics.
- Manufacturer quality control and documentation to demonstrate compliance with product standards and regulatory requirements.
- Laboratory test reports that inform installers, specifiers and regulators about likely in-service changes in thickness and thermal performance.
Practical benefits include reproducible measurement of settlement, clearer guidance on installed density and conditioning, and a defined report structure to support decision making.

- ISO 29466 - Determination of thickness for thermal insulating products
- ISO 9076‑2 and ISO 29470 cited for installation and density considerations
For laboratories and product developers, prEN ISO 18393-1 provides a repeatable method to quantify settlement under realistic humidity and temperature cycling relevant to ventilated attic applications.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies
casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
EN ISO 18393-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 163, Thermal performance and energy
use in the built environment, Subcommittee SC 1, Test and measurement methods.
EN ISO 18393 consists of the following parts, under the general title Thermal insulation products —
