Overview
EN 13329:2016+A1:2017/FprA2 is an influential European Standard developed by CEN for laminate floor coverings featuring a surface layer based on aminoplastic thermosetting resins. This standard outlines the essential specifications, performance requirements, and test methods to ensure product quality and consistency across the industry. It also provides a systematic classification for laminate flooring products, enabling clear guidance regarding their suitability for domestic and commercial applications.
The standard plays a vital role in protecting manufacturers, specifiers, and end users by standardizing technical criteria for laminate flooring, promoting consumer confidence and helping users make informed flooring choices.
Key Topics
- Product Characteristics: Specifies the composition and physical properties of laminate flooring elements, including substrate requirements and the use of aminoplastic thermosetting resins.
- Classification System: Uses EN ISO 10874 for a standardized classification, indicating appropriate uses (domestic, commercial) and service levels (moderate, general, heavy, very heavy use).
- Requirements and Tests: Details critical performance tests and metrics such as abrasion resistance, impact resistance (both small ball and large ball tests), resistance to staining, dimensional stability, and locking strength.
- Impact Resistance Testing: Provides procedures for determining large ball impact resistance, including sample preparation, underlay use, and criteria for identifying damage.
- Marking and Packaging: Sets out requirements related to product identification and packaging, which ensure traceability and facilitate correct installation.
- Installation Areas: Specifies that laminate flooring should primarily be used in dry indoor environments, such as living areas, offices, and domestic kitchens. Wet areas like bathrooms and saunas are excluded unless otherwise authorized by the manufacturer and specific installation guidelines are followed.
Applications
The guidance within EN 13329:2016+A1:2017/FprA2 is designed to be directly applicable to:
- Product Manufacturers: For defining production parameters, ensuring compliance, and enabling CE marking of laminate flooring products.
- Architects, Designers, and Specifiers: For selecting appropriate flooring materials based on expected use, performance classification, and required durability.
- Retailers and Distributors: To convey clear, standardized information to consumers and commercial buyers regarding product suitability.
- Installers: For ensuring correct installation procedures based on manufacturer guidelines and compliance with tested performance levels.
- End Users and Building Owners: To make informed choices about flooring options for residential and commercial premises, based on durability and maintenance needs.
The standard helps streamline decision-making and project planning by providing transparent performance benchmarks for laminate floor coverings.
Related Standards
- EN ISO 10874: Classification for resilient, textile, and laminate floor coverings, forming the basis for service classification in EN 13329.
- EN 438 Series: Methods for surface resistance and impact testing, referenced in determining durability and resistance characteristics.
- EN 13756: Defines terminology and substrate requirements for laminate and wood-based floor coverings.
- ISO 24336 / EN 424 / EN 425: Detail test methods for thickness swell, effect of furniture leg, and castor chair effects, as referenced within performance requirements.
- ISO 24334 / ISO 24339: Specify methods for testing locking strength and dimensional stability.
These related standards collectively support a robust framework for the performance, quality, and safety of laminate floor coverings, ensuring reliable outcomes for stakeholders throughout the supply chain.
